The US insists that the nuclear program be part of the negotiations from the beginning, while Tehran proposes to postpone the issue.

President Donald Trump is not satisfied with Iran's latest proposal to resolve the two-month-old war, a US official said, dampening hopes for a resolution to the conflict that has disrupted energy supplies, fuelled inflation and caused thousands of casualties.

Iran's latest proposal calls for discussion of its nuclear program to be put aside until the war is over and disputes over shipping in the Persian Gulf are resolved.

This approach is unlikely to satisfy the US, which wants nuclear issues addressed from the start. A US official briefed on the president's meeting with his advisers on Monday said on condition of anonymity that Trump was unhappy with the proposal for precisely that reason.

White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales stated that the US "will not negotiate through the media" and that it "has made its red lines clear," as the Trump administration seeks to end the war against Iran, launched in February together with Israel.

A previous 2015 deal between Iran and several countries, including the United States, significantly limited Iran's nuclear program, which Tehran has defended as being for peaceful civilian purposes. But that deal fell apart after Trump unilaterally withdrew during his first term.

Hopes for a revival of peace efforts have faded after the US President canceled a planned visit last weekend by special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi traveled there twice over the weekend.

Araqchi also visited Oman and on Monday traveled to Russia, where he met with President Vladimir Putin and received support from an early ally.

Oil prices rise again

As the conflicting parties remain far from an agreement, oil prices resumed their rise, extending gains in early Asian trade on Tuesday, Reuters writes.

“For oil traders, it’s not the rhetoric that matters anymore, but the actual physical flow of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz, and currently that flow remains limited,” said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at City Index and FOREX.com.

Ship tracking data shows that at least six tankers loaded with Iranian oil have been forced to return to Iran in recent days due to the US blockade, highlighting the impact of the war on maritime traffic.

Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the US seizures of Iranian-linked tankers, calling them on social media "open legalization of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas."

Before the war, between 125 and 140 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz every day. According to Kpler data and satellite analysis by SynMax, only seven ships have passed through in the past 24 hours, and none were carrying oil for the global market.

With his approval ratings falling, Trump faces domestic pressure to end the war, for which he has given the American public different reasons at times.

Araqchi told reporters in Russia that Trump had sought negotiations because the US had not achieved any of its objectives.

Senior Iranian officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the proposal presented by Araqchi in Islamabad over the weekend envisions negotiations in stages, leaving the nuclear issue for later.

The first step would be to end the US-Israeli war against Iran and secure guarantees that the US cannot resume it. Next, negotiators would address the US Navy’s blockade of Iranian maritime trade and the status of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran aims to reopen under its control.

Only after these steps would other issues be addressed, including the long-standing dispute over Iran's nuclear program, as Tehran continues to seek some form of recognition from the US of its right to enrich uranium. / Pamphlet /
