Deadlock in US-Iran talks, Pakistan calls for diplomacy and cooperation

Pakistan's Ambassador to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has warned that disruptions to global sea lanes, particularly the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, pose a serious threat to international peace, economic stability and developing countries.

Speaking at the UN Security Council on maritime security, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad stressed that protecting maritime corridors is essential not only for trade, but also for broader development and security purposes.

"Global maritime spaces are a key geostrategic arena where the challenges of the 21st century intersect. They are the lifeline of global trade, an indicator of the Earth's environment," he said, noting that modern economies depend heavily on uninterrupted maritime trade.

Ahmad highlighted the ongoing standoff in the Strait of Hormuz as a clear example of how maritime instability can escalate into global crises.

"The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its devastating effects on food and energy security, as well as supply chain disruption, are a concrete example ," he said.
