The European Commission said it will react firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade.
This reaction comes after US President Donald Trump warned that his administration will soon announce a 25% tariff on imports from the EU.
"The EU will not stand idly by. We will always protect European businesses, workers and consumers from unjustified tariffs," says the European Commission.
Asked about tariffs on the EU, after discussing tariffs on US neighbors Canada and Mexico, as well as China, Trump said he "has made a decision that will be announced very soon."
"It will generally be 25 percent, on cars and other goods," Trump said as he announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from the European bloc earlier this month.
Trump stated that the tariffs would be applied "broadly," although he added that they would specifically hit car imports.
"The EU was created to harm the United States. That's their goal, and they've done a good job of it. But now I'm president," Trump said.
Trump's pledge to impose reciprocal tariffs on European imports has shaken up the long-standing partnership between the United States and Europe. The president has said that US tariffs will be in line with taxes imposed on American imports.
