Diplomatic efforts over Ukraine are entering their most critical phase yet, after US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday, February 27, a phone call with Vladimir Putin. Although the White House did not specify the exact date of the call, Trump made it clear to reporters that the discussion focused solely on a cessation of hostilities, stating: "I spoke to Putin... I would like this war to end."
The US side appears to be pushing for a final agreement before the July 4 anniversary, setting an ambitious timetable that is causing skepticism among European allies. For his part, special envoy Steven Witkoff, working with Jared Kushner, revealed that concrete proposals have already been presented that could lead to a Zelensky-Putin meeting within the next three weeks.
According to information, the Ukrainian president has already instructed his team to prepare the ground for such a meeting in Geneva, despite the fact that the last trilateral talks in the same city ended without a substantial result on territorial issues.
At the same time, Washington does not rule out the possibility that the meeting of the two leaders will take place in a trilateral summit with the participation of Trump himself. Witkoff noted that the US president is ready to intervene personally, but only if he is sure that the meeting will lead to a "final and optimal result."
