United States President Donald Trump has directed direct criticism at NATO through a post on his Truth Social platform.
" Unfortunately, no one - not our people or NATO - seems to understand the situation without applying strong pressure ," Trump wrote.
The statement comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment and shortly after Trump hosted NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington.
According to Reuters, Rutte has informed several European capitals that the US president is seeking concrete commitments within the coming days regarding assistance for the security and guaranteeing the functioning of the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, Mark Rutte acknowledged that there had been shortcomings from some member states, but stressed that most allies had provided substantial support.
Speaking to CNN, he stated that "some countries" did not rise to the occasion, however, he clarified that "the majority of European countries did what they promised."
According to him, many countries contributed in a concrete way by providing bases, logistical facilities, and permission for flights over their territory, fulfilling commitments at a critical moment.
Rutte described the meeting with Donald Trump as "frank and open", noting that the US president expressed his dissatisfaction with the stance of some allies.
