A Russian general who oversaw the construction of Russian President Vladimir Putin's private residence has suddenly died in prison.
General Gennady Lopyrev, 69, fell ill on Monday as doctors announced he was suffering from leukemia.
As The Sun reports, there are suspicions that the Russian general was poisoned when he was eligible for parole.
Lopyrev was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2017 in a military court on charges of bribery and illegal possession of ammunition. He denied these accusations until the last moments of his life.
As head of the secret service, he had personally supervised work on the Gelendzhik hilltop mansion that was built with state money for Putin's private needs.
It was also responsible for the official residence of the Russian leader Bocharev in Sochi.
Lopyrev was one of Putin's closest security associates and was seen in Moscow in 2002 with the Russian president and then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
