The President of the United States, Joe Biden, said that his decision to withdraw from the race for re-election was "the right thing to do".
Biden made the comments during a phone call with Democratic Party campaign aides. These were his first since he withdrew from the race on July 21.
He threw his support behind his running mate, Kamala Harris, who must now secure the party's nomination for president.
"I know the news [of my withdrawal] was surprising and hard to hear, but it was the right thing to do," Biden told campaign officials.
He said the team worked "with spirit" to help him stay in office for a second term, but added that he "is not going anywhere" and that he will remain "fully engaged" in the campaign.
"I hope you give Kamala a piece of your heart and soul that you gave me," Biden told campaign representatives.
"We still have to save this democracy. Trump still poses a danger to this nation," Biden said, referring to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The US presidential election will be held on November 5.
