43 countries around the world have demanded an international investigation into the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

This call was made by the ambassador of the European Union (EU) to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Lotte Knudsen, on behalf of the 27 EU member states and 16 other countries, including Canada, Britain and Madhe, the United States and Ukraine, which have accused the Russian president, Putin, of being primarily responsible.

"We are outraged by the death of opposition politician Alexei Navalny, for which Putin and the Russian authorities must bear the ultimate responsibility," said the EU ambassador on behalf of 43 countries.

Alexei Navalny died on February 16 under mysterious circumstances in an Arctic penal colony, where he was serving a sentence for "extremism", and was buried on Friday in Moscow.

"Russia must definitely allow an independent and transparent international investigation into the circumstances of his sudden death," the ambassador added.

43 countries of the world call on Russia to release political prisoners, journalists, human rights defenders and critics of the war in Ukraine.

"We call on the Russian Federation to put an end to this climate of impunity and to create a safe environment for the political opposition and critical voices ," their response states.
