Shops in Gaza will run out of food stocks in less than a week, with retailers unable to be resupplied by wholesalers due to "widespread destruction and insecurity" gripping the area, a spokesman for the UN's World Food Program on Tuesday to CNN.
Bread supplies are running out, with only one of five flour mills in the Gaza Strip operating due to a lack of fuel and electricity, the spokesman warned. Meanwhile, people have been "lining up for hours to get bread" from bakeries, and only five of the 23 bakeries contracted by WFP to provide fresh bread to shelters are operational.
In warehouses, commercial supplies of essential food commodities are "enough for about two weeks", but due to damaged infrastructure, it is difficult to distribute, the UN agency's spokesman added.
With warehouses located in Gaza City, WFP is trying to channel food into the southern region where displaced people are moving.
