A young man who was in the car with the 17-year-old who was shot and killed by a police officer in France, sparking unrest across the country, has shared his story to "uncover the truth".
The killing of Nahel Merzouk, of Algerian and Tunisian descent, ignited long-standing tensions between police and young people in France's housing projects, who struggle with poverty and unemployment.
He was shot during the Tuesday morning rush hour while driving a car in Nanterre, a small town on the outskirts of Paris.
A passenger in the car posted a video on social media saying he wanted to "tell the truth... because there are a lot of lies on social media."
Expressing that he wants to tell the story from A to Z, the young man explains that they borrowed the Mercedes and decided to go for a drive around Nanterre, adding: "We were not under the influence of alcohol or drugs."
They were driving in the bus lane when they noticed police motorbikes following them with flashing lights and stopped the car.
He says an officer approached the car window and told Nahel to get down before saying, " Turn off the engine or I'll shoot you ."
The young man claims the officer then hit Nahel with the butt of his gun, then a second officer arrived and also hit Nahel with the butt of his own gun.
He says that the first officer then put a gun to Naheli's head and said: " Don't move because I will put a bullet in your head" .
The young man claims that the second officer told him: " Shoot ".
He says the first officer then shot Nahel again with the butt of his gun, causing him to release his foot from the brake pedal and causing the car to roll forward.
He says the second officer then fired his gun, so Naheli put his foot on the gas.
" I am shocked by what happened in front of me. I looked at him with pain, he trembled. We hit a roadblock. I was afraid. I got out of the vehicle. And ran away. I thought they might shoot me. So I ran. I am shocked by what happened before me. For my friend" , he said./ SkyNews
