Serbia is no longer hiding and has made official the agreement to use underground assets for geopolitical advantages against Kosovo.

The European Union and Serbia have signed an agreement to give the EU access to exploit Serbia's underground resources.

After the agreement, the biggest lithium mine in Europe is expected to start working in Serbia.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was on Friday at a joint press conference with the President of Serbia, Alexander Vucic, and the Vice President of the European Commission, Maros Sefcovic, where a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the EU and Serbia for a strategic partnership for sustainable raw materials, battery production chains and electric vehicles.

According to Vucic, this mine has the potential to extract 4% of the Gross Domestic Product. Serbia's GDP for 2023 was 75 billion dollars.

Serbian opposition and environmental activists have warned they will block railways and major roads if the government goes ahead with the project.

German Chancellor Scholz emphasized that the project will be done only if "it is oriented towards the standards that we consider correct".

Scholz's visit comes after the Serbian government renewed the license for Rio Tinto to develop the largest lithium mine in Europe, which is considered a very valuable treasure in these times when the electric vehicle industry is booming. If pushed forward, the $2.4 billion project could turn Serbia into an attractive country covering 90% of Europe's current lithium needs.

Serbia-Germany-EU agreement, bad news for Kosovo

Serbia is no longer hiding and is seeking to use underground resources for geopolitical advantages.

This news was announced by Serbian Prime Minister Milosh Vucevic, who confirmed this himself, stressing that he is only interested in political and economic advantages.

Speaking about the extraction of minerals such as lithium, which is used in car batteries and other rechargeable electronic devices, he said he is concerned about protecting the environment and not about the profits of private companies, as there are many protests in Serbia about the construction of mines.

"We are only interested in what Serbia gets and what benefits the citizens will have, to protect our citizens, streams and rivers. Jadarite or lithium represents a geopolitical opportunity for Serbia. If there is a great geopolitical need for it, let's use it in the case of Kosovo and the preservation of Republika Srpska", said Milosh Vučevič.

And precisely to discuss the possibility of cooperation with Serbia for this precious mineral, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, came to Belgrade./ Pamphlet
