Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the United States has ignored compelling evidence that Russia helped Iran target American bases in the Middle East because it "trusts" Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He made these statements in an interview for the podcast 'The Rest is Politics', hosted by Alastair Campbell.

According to Zelensky , he has tried to draw the White House's attention to the close cooperation between Moscow and Tehran. He said that Russian military satellites have photographed critical energy infrastructure facilities in the Gulf states and Israel, as well as the locations of US military bases in the region. According to him, the Kremlin has passed this data and images to the Iranian regime to facilitate attacks.

“I have said this publicly. Have we heard any reaction from the US to Russia that it should stop this?” Zelensky asked. He added: “The problem is that they trust Putin. And that is unfortunate.”

Zelensky said that Donald Trump's team has failed to "really understand the details of what Russia wants."

Asked why, he said that Trump's two negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have "spent a lot of time" with Putin and his top officials.

He said they have traveled to Moscow five times in the past year and have yet to visit Kiev. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has increased pressure on Ukraine to hand over the eastern region of Donbas, where intense fighting is taking place. Putin has suggested he would accept a ceasefire if Ukraine gave up the territory.

Zelensky stressed that he has a deeper understanding of the Russian leader's psychology and real war objectives than the White House. He warned that Putin will not stop if he takes Donbass, but will also try to occupy regional capitals such as Dnipro and Kharkiv.

“We have to admit that partly Americans think that [Donbas] is not something important for us,” he said.

"They don't want to admit that Putin will lie to them and that he can continue the invasion even after such steps. Americans are confident that they can trust Putin."

Zelensky also called US Vice President JD Vance's visit to Budapest to campaign for Hungarian President Viktor Orbán "unhelpful." However, he stressed that he had no intention of interfering in the election, adding that it was up to Hungarian citizens to decide.

Finally, the Ukrainian president stressed that Europe must increase its power at a time when the US is threatening to withdraw from NATO. He proposed that the European Union join forces with Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Norway to create a military bloc capable of deterring Russia.

"Without Ukraine and Turkey, Europe will not have an army comparable to Russia's. With Ukraine, Turkey, Norway and the United Kingdom, you will control security on the seas, not just on one sea," he said, adding that he is convinced that Kiev will one day join the European Union.
