Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested a ceasefire deal could be reached if the Ukrainian territory he controls can be taken "under the NATO umbrella" - allowing him to negotiate the return of the rest later "diplomatically".

Zelenskyy said NATO membership would be offered to unoccupied parts of Ukraine to end the "hot war phase," as long as the NATO invitation itself recognizes Ukraine's internationally recognized borders.
He appeared to accept that the occupied eastern parts of the country would be left out of such a deal for the time being.
"If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we must take under the umbrella of NATO the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control. We must do it quickly. And then on the [occupied] territory of Ukraine, Ukraine can return them in a diplomatic way," Zelensky said.
