For now, the EU seems to be the right solution for Ukraine, and Zelensky has done it.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Ukraine will not accept a minerals deal with the United States that would jeopardize its membership in the European Union.
" The Constitution of Ukraine clearly states that our course is towards the EU... There are very important reforms and corresponding steps. Nothing that could jeopardize ... Ukraine's accession to the EU cannot be accepted ," Zelensky said at a press conference in Kiev on Friday evening, Politico reports.
His comments come after Bloomberg and the Financial Times reported on Washington's latest minerals offer to Kiev, which would give the United States access to Ukraine's oil, gas and minerals through a joint investment fund that would share the proceeds of these projects between the two countries.
The Ukrainian president confirmed that Kiev had officially received a new draft of the agreement proposed by Washington, which included many new provisions that had not been previously discussed, as well as some aspects that had already been rejected by both sides, according to Ukrainian media.
“The European Commission will make an assessment of the text, which could grant preferential treatment to American companies, once there is a concrete agreement in black and white. Such an agreement will have to be seen from the perspective of relations between Ukraine and the EU and, in particular, in terms of accession negotiations ,” Paula Pinho, the Commission’s chief spokeswoman, said on Friday.
This situation puts Kiev in the position of choosing between the US and the EU, so far Zelensky has made the right choice, Europe. This is because with President Trump at the helm, the US is seeking to extort Kiev by forcing it to sign an agreement for the unlimited exploitation of its minerals and natural resources.
On the other hand, the EU has continued to provide funds to keep Ukraine's war machine afloat, which faces daily Russian attacks. The EU has also pledged not to accept a peace deal with Russia that would harm Ukraine, unlike the one proposed by the US. Ukrainian minerals are also a target of the EU, but the latter are willing to make an offer much more favorable than that of the US.
