According to Channel 12, great anger has erupted in Israel after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire on the Lebanese front before the Israeli cabinet could vote on it.
Trump's announcement, which came as an external "dictate," is seen by many Israelis as a national disgrace, as the government and much of public opinion wanted the fight against Hezbollah to continue until military objectives were achieved.
This comes as Israeli forces are still present on the ground in southern Lebanon and are continuing to strike targets. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that the Israeli army was ready to cease fire tonight, but Trump's sudden announcement created surprise and deep indignation within the military and political ranks.
According to former Israeli diplomat Shaiel Ben Ephraim, the fact that Israel has yet to issue an official comment indicates two things: first, the ceasefire was imposed on Israel from the outside; second, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu still does not know how to present this decision to public opinion and cabinet members, who are “outraged and shocked.”
Ben Ephraim emphasizes that Israel failed to achieve any of the main goals of the war, the security of the northern residents and the creation of a buffer zone across the Litanim River, while Israeli troops on the ground now risk being left exposed if the ceasefire goes into effect immediately.
This development comes after about 45 days of intense fighting in this new round, with hundreds and thousands of casualties mainly on the Lebanese side, and increases tensions within Israel over what is seen as a new diplomatic "failure".
