General Rassan Alian, the Israeli Authority Coordinator for the Palestinian Territories (COGAT), revealed the attempts of senior Hamas civilian officials to leave Gaza through the Israeli evacuation mechanism.
Israel rejected the requests. The applications were submitted by Hamas government minister Mohammad Madhoun and his family, the head of Hamas's Foreign Affairs Committee, Ismail Ashkar, and the head of a government committee, Alaa al-Din Batta.
Israel says senior officials are using the people of Gaza as human shields.
"While Hamas is telling you not to move south, its leaders are trying to escape. They are using you as human shields," Alian said.
