The subtle art of self-destruction!

Democracy is a fragile thing. It is like a lamb growing up among wolves. Everyone admires the innocence of the lamb, but more often they admire the taste of its meat. And the lamb, surprisingly, puts the knife in their hand...

Democracy is man's greatest invention, after the wheel and brandy. And like the wheel and brandy, it can propel you forward, or it can roll you down a stream where no one will find you. It gives us the great freedom - to choose. And, because we are so wise, we often choose the very thing that will destroy our own freedom.

It's a strange spectacle: the people vote for the man who openly says to them: "I'll shut you up as soon as you give me power." And the people, enthusiastically, say: "Bravo! Here are the keys to the house, and don't forget to close our windows!" There is something magnificent in this kind of collective behavior. Other systems of government cannot offer it: only democracy is so generous as to give you the freedom to cut your own throat.

In a kingdom, at least you have a clear culprit: the king. In a dictatorship, you know who is oppressing you: the dictator. And in a democracy? There you have the luxury of blaming yourself. “We chose this fate,” you say proudly, as you count the taxes, the rising prices, and the broken promises. It is no wonder that people love democracy so much: it is the only system where you beat yourself up and then applaud for the taste of the stick.

The majority, they say, is always right. This is the biggest joke of any comedy I've ever seen. There was a time when the majority thought the earth was flat, that rain came from angry gods, and that every witch should be burned. The majority is an orchestra that always plays with two notes: fear and enthusiasm. But there is no other choice. This is the only orchestra that plays the great symphony of democracy.

Democracy is a fragile thing. It is like a lamb growing up among wolves. Everyone admires the innocence of the lamb, but more often they admire the taste of its meat. And the lamb, surprisingly, puts the knife in their hand.

But therein lies its great beauty. Democracy is not a gift that you take and put on a shelf. It is a child that must be nurtured, educated, and protected every day. If you leave it alone, it grows fragile, and sooner or later someone will come to rob it. If you hand it over to the incompetent and the shameless, they turn it into a blind crowd marching towards the abyss with patriotic cheers.

Ultimately, democracy is like a ship that doesn't have many rudders but has many helmsmen. Everyone has the right to steer. But the tragedy is when, at the most critical moment, the rudder is taken by someone who doesn't even know how to read a compass, but has the courage to say: "I know the way."
