Sali Berisha seems to have completely regretted embarking on the diaspora voting adventure and is looking for a way out. The only official way out is to refuse to vote on the technical amendment to the law, which allows for deadlines for sending votes from the diaspora.
Even though he has agreed in principle, he is pulling out a "tail" every day to justify the failure of the diaspora vote.
This week he invented the idea of Albanians who do not have Albanian identification documents voting. And, to make this invention more credible, he says that 1 million or so Albanians are excluded.
According to official CEC sources, Albanians who fled Albania after 1991, who have not applied for official Albanian documents, are around 150 thousand and not 1 million or so. But they are Albanians who have given up on Albania and are no longer employed.
The very legal system that the DP voted for does not allow people who do not have an Albanian biometric document to vote. Because, if it is for people of Albanian origin, with this criterion, it is also up to the Arbëresh, Arvanites and the Arbëresh diaspora in Argentina to vote. And Sali Berisha knows this.
The reason he is inventing this is to increase pressure not to vote on the legal changes that enable diaspora voting, but in the end he will vote for them. Because, more than to vote, Berisha needs this battle to legitimize the taint of the elections.
The only thing Berisha is looking for these days is to gather reasons to say why he lost and why the elections were not fair. And tarnishing the process through diaspora voting is easy.
To agree, it is a vote that risks being familial or collective, risks being pre-purchased and identifiable as a process. But this is the standard they themselves have agreed to.
For Berisha to further expose the election taint, he will simply campaign with protests in front of embassies, since he cannot gather people in meetings in the diaspora.
He would have preferred not to have the diaspora vote at all, but now it's too late to turn back, because the bluff he made backfired. So, at the very least, he should use this vote to tarnish the elections. It's the only thing he needs after May 11. He has forgotten about the victory himself.
