Only a call from the United States can divide the Kosovar world between evil and non-evil.
For three days, this Sunday, general parliamentary elections are being held in Kosovo. Kosovo is holding these elections in conditions of semi-isolation from the Western world. The Kurti government has exhausted and pushed the country into a narrow path with no way out, without Western allies, into an economic loop, into a world of illusion and deception, into sanctions and disgust from the very powers that gave Kosovo the spirit and strength to become a state.
Albin Kurti is going crazy in the stands full of screams, arrogance and untruths. His militants have taken over social media pages and are threatening anyone who does not like Kurti. Europe has changed the 'horse in the hay', that is, the official who will lead the negotiations with Serbia. The State Department has urgently summoned President Vjosa Osmani.
None of this changes anything in Kosovo dominated by Kurti's VV. Kosovo will be even worse off if its citizens make a grave mistake on Sunday.
Only a call from the United States can divide the Kosovar world between evil and non-evil. The US directly appealed to the citizens of Kosovo: 'Do not vote for Albin Kurti. We are all in the West against him.. Do not be fooled!'.
Nowhere in the world has the biggest and closest ally of a state ethnicity said so clearly what a people must do with themselves, if they do not want to make mistakes. A people makes mistakes, they certainly have the right to make mistakes, they are right because the people themselves pay for the mistake. This is being weighed these three or four days in Kosovo.
Here, as rarely happens, all the factors come together.
Kurti, the risk factor:
This one here has been the same. It brought crisis to Kosovo and the region, it put allies like the US and the EU in great embarrassment, it left the country without investments, it created a suspicious paradigm in the world that 'we rushed when we did it', it worsened the name of Kosovo as an unreliable state, it froze every relationship with Western institutions, but it also did not clearly prove who it is with in this world. From the beginning, Kurti had been against the establishment of the Kosovo state, but when others did it, he said 'why not take the spoon?'.
Serbia, which is often associated with Kosovo, is the same as it was.
He has only gained value in the eyes of the international community because Kurti has been unfair to ethnic Serbs in Kosovo and to Serbian municipalities. For Kurti, there are two Serbias:
One that he himself knows and the other that he puts before the Kosovars. For the people, 'Serbia is the black one, a bad neighbor, the cause of the very fact that Kurti lies in everything he says. The people live and eat dry bread with the joy that 'we are defeating Serbia'.
While the second Serbia is 'Albin's Serbia'. Kurti has declared Serbia the 'Kosovo regime'. Everything, good or bad, exists in Kosovo because Serbia exists.
Rich Grenell, the American diplomat, is the same as he was.
He was the US envoy to the region at the time when it was determined that Kurti was 'pulling out the roots of Kosovo'; and he did not agree. He is the same today, except in a higher mission and closer to President Trump. The day before yesterday, Grenell, on behalf of the US president, called: "Get rid of Albin Kurti." Today he called President Osmani to Washington, in the hope that 'she will be able to do some good deed'. These Kurti people in Kosovo are thinking that 'Grenell is Grenell, he is angry with Kosovo and Kurti'. Albini went out to the tower's turret and let out a scream against Grenell: "We have plenty of guns...!'.
All the factors look the same.
But Donald Trump, president of America, is not the same.
Kosovo came to this point because 'they were as they were', meaning 'pull and don't break', gathered in Brussels, but Kurti doesn't come, the EU decides but Kurti doesn't implement. They have long since fallen into exhausted formulas, processes built on illusion, agreements based on fantasy and Kosovo drowned in lies. That era is over; now it's Donald Trump.
This is the difference. Trump is not here to flatter, nor to soften, nor to equivocate, nor to utter words about Kosovo that 'we have you in our hearts, if you want, convince Kurti that he is taking it out on you'. No.
Donald Trump makes the difference, he is here to set the sign. The day before yesterday, on that sign it was read openly by everyone: 'Don't be fooled by Kurti'.
