The DP lost the battle to purge Berisha, now it's time to purge the DP

Although the final results will begin to appear after midnight, it seems that the winner is no longer a mystery but only the depth of the victory.

The Socialists are heading towards a significant electoral victory, in a campaign dominated by their effort to continue the country's development course and by Sali Berisha's struggles to escape American and British sanctions through corrupt and non-transparent payments.

According to an exit poll first conducted by Albania Post, the Socialists could secure 79 seats, of which 20 in Tirana, an important victory that confirms their majority in the capital, despite the problems caused by the brutal arrest of the mayor, Erion Veliaj.

The exit poll also suggests a 5-2 victory in Berat, 6-4 in Korça, as well as an 8-4 result in Vlora.

Although the final results will begin to appear after midnight, it seems that the winner is no longer a mystery but only the depth of the victory.

The campaign and the outcome of these elections constitute a bitter lesson for the Democratic Party, the largest opposition force, which based its campaign on the hope of amnestying Sali Berisha and buying off his dirty past with millions — and not on a new alternative for Albania.

Held hostage by the Berisha family, the Albanian opposition is today in its worst days. Not only because of the result, but because of the lack of hope for the future and the lack of reflection to reform the Democratic Party.

Sali Berisha has declared that he will not resign from the DP despite the defeat and that he will only leave "when God takes him."

This means that worse than today's loss for the DP is its future with an occupier at the helm, who is determined to hold it hostage for his own and his family's interests.

The vote, on the other hand, is a real opportunity for the DP to break away from its legacy and rise again with a new leader, whoever he may be, as long as he is not under his power. But this remains to be seen.

Lulzim Basha's failure to cope with Berisha's return, as well as the transition of the majority of MPs from Basha to Berisha, are a bad signal for the lack of reflection within the party.

Now that they have secured their mandates, it is time to think about a real future for the DP, by waging a real battle for its change.

As Berisha himself said, they may try to turn this defeat into a second “Summer Day” for the DP. The DP lost the battle to purge Berisha. Now to purge the DP

But for this they don't have to wait for Mr. Berisha to take over. Because at this rate, he could take over the Democratic Party first.
