Who would have imagined that the United States of America, still the world's greatest power, would launch a war against Iran without a clear strategy, without defined objectives, and without a credible exit plan?
It seems incredible that just two months later, Washington would find itself frustrated, deceived, and humiliated by the very regime it had intended to intimidate. Who would have predicted that Washington would fail to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—which was open before the war—by blackmailing the world economy and bowing to Pakistani mediation?
Yes, to Pakistan, a country that is today much closer to Tehran than to Washington. In normal times, we would call this absurd. Or surreal. But with Donald Trump, reality humiliates even satire. Who would have imagined that after threatening, insulting, and wooing Iran, and finally begging it to participate in peace talks in Islamabad, the American delegation would be ignored in this way?
The departure from Washington was postponed not once, but twice, simply because Iranian negotiators had not yet decided whether or not to show up. Trump’s team of “top people” — JD Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner — more closely resembles the troupe of famous Italian comedians “Aldo, Giovanni, and Giacomo.”
Even this could be an insult to the latter. The confusion in the White House is total. Trump announced that Vice President Vance would not go to Islamabad, but a few minutes later, the same White House corrected the president.
Vance was scheduled to leave on Monday and arrive on Tuesday, as the ceasefire expired on Wednesday. Trump threatened not to extend it, and to bomb Iranian bridges and infrastructure if Tehran did not sign a deal by that date. Then, Vance's departure was postponed again, amid total uncertainty.
At this point, the Iranians called Trump’s bluff and he backed down. On Tuesday afternoon, the president called an emergency meeting at the White House. Time was running out. Air Force Two was ready at Andrews to fly Vance to Pakistan, but there was just one problem: the Iranians were playing for time. They weren’t communicating, they weren’t confirming anything, and they weren’t even showing up in Islamabad.
On Wall Street, this situation was dubbed “Taco Tuesday”: Trump Always Chickens Out. So the impulsive and volatile president took to social media to announce the extension of the ceasefire.

Edhe Wall Street Journal, zëri historik i konservatorizmit amerikan, ka dhënë një verdikt shkatërrues. Në një editorial me titull “Irani e merr Trump-in për budalla”, Elliott Kaufman shkroi: “Sa herë mendojnë t’ia bëjnë këtë lojë para se të rihapet Ngushtica e Hormuzit?”.
Kur edhe gazeta e Rupert Murdoch-ut e përshkruan kështu një president republikan, dëmi është tashmë shumë i madh. Dhe tani, çfarë i mbetet Trump-it? Me shumë gjasa, një poshtërim i maskuar si diplomaci.
Teherani është treguar më i durueshëm, më i disiplinuar dhe më i sofistikuar sesa njerëzit që rrethojnë presidentin amerikan. Madje sot regjimi iranian është më i fortë se më parë. Bombardimet nuk prodhuan asnjë ndryshim regjimi. Përkundrazi, ato forcuan “skifterët” vendas.
Në Uashington, Trump do të mbetet duke pritur në telefon, me shpresën për të marrë një përgjigje nga Teherani që do t’i lejojë të kërkojë sërish Nobelin për Paqen dhe të shesë si triumf çfarëdo lloj marrëveshjeje. Por nuk do të jetë marrëveshja e shekullit.
Ka shumë të ngjarë të jetë një pakt i ngjashëm me atë që ai vetë e grisi në vitin 2018. Dhe këtu qëndron akti final i dështimit në Iran: manjati mund të katandiset të firmosë një marrëveshje pothuajse identike me paktin bërthamor të vitit 2015 të negociuar nga Barack Obama dhe evropianët - pikërisht atë marrëveshje që Trump e quajti katastrofike.
Kjo do të ishte ironia përfundimtare: muaj të tërë lufte, jetë të humbura, 50 miliardë dollarë të shpenzuar, kaos ekonomik global dhe humbje totale e besueshmërisë së SHBA-së, vetëm për t’u rikthyer në kushtet e vitit 2015.
This is the tragedy of the Trump era: wasted blood, strategic confusion, a president who threatens war crimes and then backs down, and a superpower that is starting to look ridiculous. A superpower that is beginning to resemble a failed state: unpredictable, chaotic, and dangerous.
