The European Parliament has achieved significant interest from parliamentary groups regarding the report on Albania. By the deadline, around 305 amendments were submitted to be attached to the final documents to be adopted by the Strasbourg Parliament.
The amendments, in a minority of them, were drafted by a group that knows Albania well and has access to developments, such as the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAlister.
These amendments are more focused, more generalized, and in all likelihood, most of them will be included in the final report.
Meanwhile, the two largest political groups, the EPP and the PSE, have proposed amendments that appear to be largely partisan and driven by Tirana's politics.
These amendments seem to have been pushed not by the domes of the largest parliamentary groups, but mainly by individual MEPs, whose influence comes as a result of lobbying by Tirana's politicians.
The chances are that none or very few of these partisan amendments will be included in the final report, which will come in a draft drafted by the rapporteur and the leaders of the relevant groups, in cooperation with the European Commission.
However, in the coming days we will be clearer about the final details of the draft that will be approved by the votes of MEPs.
