When Edi Rama declared in the 2017 elections that Meta was a thief and therefore could not create an alliance with him, all the socialists denounced the LSI's thievery in their 2013-2017 co-government. When the same Edi Rama declared in 2017 that Ilir Meta should be elected President of the Republic of Albania, all the socialists lined up to vote for the president they rejected yesterday as a thief. And when Edi Rama complained in 2021 that Meta was the worst president in the country's history, no socialist asked the question: "President, who elected this thief as president?"
The geopolitical risk of a Trump presidency, both for Albania and Kosovo, is clear. Trump is a fan of Vladimir Putin and distrustful of NATO. His coming to power means the weakening of NATO, the capitulation of Ukraine, the strengthening of Russia in the east and, as a result, Vucic's Serbia in our region. So from a geopolitical point of view Trump's victory in the November presidential elections in the USA is bad news for Albania and the Albanians in the region. This is clear.
What is less evident is the danger that Trumpism as a political philosophy and practice represents to our democracy. Especially if we keep in mind that American democracy is not only a point of inspiration and reference, but also often a direct guardian of Albanian democracy. Trumpism in power in the USA will legitimize five of the most problematic phenomena of our democracy, the reduction of political parties to the interests of the leader, a weak justice system, an oligarchic government, the absence of a media independent of politics, and a public space in degradation.
First, Trump represents the reduction of political parties to the leader's ego and their transformation from democratic forums to cults of leader worship. Today the US Republican Party is more of a Trump-worshiping cult than a political organization. Total submission, servility to the leader and public lynching of his enemies, are prerequisites for a political career in the Republican Party today.
It is disgusting to see how Republican politicians who yesterday denounced Trump as a fraud, dictator or delusional, today publicly lick what they previously spat on. Deputy President-elect Trump, JD Vance, who today publicly worships Trump, yesterday declared that Trump was an idiot, a despicable politician and compared him to Hitler.
The list of Republicans who yesterday denounced Trump as a dictator, fraud, narcissist and danger to democracy and who today worship him publicly is very long. It is prime evidence of the transformation of the once glorious Republican Party into a cult of President Trump worship. The Republican Party today repeats in chorus and without blushing every lie that Trump tells. The biggest among them is the denunciation of the "stealing" of the 2020 election where Trump lost and Joe Biden won, with a difference of millions of votes, even though there is no fact, however peripheral, that proves that Joe Biden stole the 2020 election.
The transformation of one of the most important political parties in the world into a cult of worshiping the president is a dangerous model not only for the USA but also for Albanian democracy that has American democracy as a reference. In other words, Trumpism in power will normalize the reduction of political parties in Albania to the interests and dimensions of the leader.
The Socialist Party has long been transformed into a pedestal of ego and worship of its leader who controls it completely. Meanwhile, the attempt to reform the Democratic Party beyond the dimensions of the historical leader failed, reducing it to a private property of the Berisha family. Be it in SP or DP, the political career develops only if you are servile to the leader and parrot his every word.

"President, who elected this thief as president?" Thus, the will of the leader becomes the unique determinant of political reality, beyond any principle, norm or political logic, in the face of a completely subjugated membership.
Even more serious is the situation in the opposition wing, where the Democratic Party has been reduced to the speaker of the leader's family and his troubles. The same deputies who yesterday denounced the Rama-Basha conspiracy in the election commission, today vote for the closed lists of the Rama-Berisha agreement. Berisha is no longer the chairman of the Democratic Party, but the Democratic Party itself.
Trumpizmi në pushtet do eklipsonte modelet demokratike alternative, siç janë Partia Demokrate në SHBA, Partia Laburiste dhe Partia Konservatore në Britani ku lideri është në funksion të partisë dhe jo anasjelltas. Partia Demokrate e SHBA-ve ofron një model alternativ demokratik ku lideri Joe Biden vuri interesat e partisë mbi egon dhe interesat e tij personale dhe familjare, edhe pse djali i tij Hunter Biden rrezikon të shkojë në burg. Dhe të mos harrojmë që Biden kish fituar me zgjedhje të lira dhe të nderëshme shumicën absolute të delegatëve në kongresin (konventën) e Partisë Demokrate që do emëronte kandidatin presidencial. Ky model demokratik do zhvlerësohej nëse Trump fiton dhe Partia Demokrate humbet në zgjedhjet e ardhëshme.
Së dyti, triumfi i Trump nënkupton nënshtrimin përfundimtar të sistemit të drejtësisë amerikane nën pushtetin e ekzekutivit. Vendimi i fundit i Gjykatës Supreme të SHBA-ve, ku Trump emëroi tre gjygjtar ultra konservator, i dha imunitet absolut presidentit në detyrë. Për herë të parë në historinë e lavdishme të sistemit të drejtësisë amerikane Presidenti deklarohet mbi ligjin dhe i paprekshëm nga sistemi i drejtësisë ndërkohë që është në detyrë, sikur të ishte mbret.
Rikthimi i Trump në presidencën e SHBA-ve do përfundonte kapjen e sistemit të drejtësisë nga ekzekutivi që ai e filloi që në presidencën e tij të parë. Ndërkohë sulmet vulgare dhe linçimet publike të Trump kundër gjygjtarëve dhe prokuroëve që po e hetojnë dobësojnë njërin prej sistemeve më të zhvilluara të drejtësisë që ka shërbyer si frymëzim dhe pikë reference për të gjitha demokracitë perëndimore, duke përfshirë edhe atë shqiptare.
Ndaj ardhja në pushtet e Trump është një lajm shumë i keq për pavarësinë e sistemit tonë të drejtësisë dhe aftësinë e tij për të kontrolluar dhe hetuar ekzekutivin dhe politikanët në pushtet. Me trumpizmin në pushtet sistemi i drejtësisë amerikane nuk mund të jetë as pikë referimi dhe as pikë frymëzimi për demokracinë tonë. Me llogjikën e vendimit të Gjykatës Supreme të SHBA-ve ekzekutivi gëzon imunitet në detyrë, ndaj kryeministri nuk mund të hetohet nga prokuroria.
Vendosja e sistemit të drejtësisë nën kontrollin e ekzekutivit nga Trump në SHBA do legjitimonte të njëjtin proces në Shqipëri. Sidomos po të kemi parasysh që lufta e Trump ndaj një drejtësie të pavarur nënkupton që administrata e tij do i jepte shumë më pak rëndësi SPAK-ut dhe reformës tonë në drejtësi. Kjo do ishte tragjike për demokracinë tonë në një moment kur si Rama edhe Berisha e shikojnë SPAK-un si një shkop në rrotat e pushtetit të tyre. Marrëveshja për listat e mbyllura që i garanton të dyve kontroll total të procesit politik është vetëm hapi i parë i bashkëpunimit Rama-Berisha për riprodhimin e kënetës sonë politike.
Në këtë mes nuk ka asnjë konspiracion Rama-Berisha, as takime të fshehta në salla të errëta. Ka thjesht përkim interesash. SPAK dhe një drejtësi e pavarur kufizon si pushtetin e Ramës në qeveri edhe atë të Berishës në opozitë. Ndaj mbështetja afatgjatë e SPAK-ut dhe e drejtësisë së pavarur nga qeverisja Rama është shumë më pak e mundur në mungesë të presionit nga SHBA-të.
Ky presion do zbehet gjatë presidencës Trump, jo vetëm si pasojë e përcmimit të tij për një sistem drejtësie të pavarur, por edhe sepse Trump nuk ka asnjë skrupull të sakrifikojë mbështetjen e SHBA-ve për SPAK-un në shkëmbim të ishullit të Sazanit për familjen e tij. Ashtu sikurse Rama dhe socialistët nuk do hezitonin tia dhuronin Sazanin familjes Trump pë tu legjitimuar në pushtet nga administrata e tij. Natyrisht e gjitha do shitet si një investim strategjik që zhvillon dhe punëson shqiptarët nëpërmjet turizmit elitar, që me siguri do u japë mundësi qytetarëve të thjeshtë të shijojnë Sazanin e ndaluar nga diktatura komuniste.
Së treti, presidenca Trump do legjitimonte qeverisjen e oligarkike dhe plutokratike që prej kohësh po konsolidohet në Shqipëri. Edhe SHBA-të prej kohësh po transformohen në një plutokraci ku miliarderët dhe interesat e fuqishme korporative prodhojnë legjislacion dhe vendimmarrje nëpërmjet lobimit dhe donacioneve elektorale.
Trump është përfaqësues i kësaj klase dhe ka qeverisur në interes të saj. Në presidencën e tij të fundi uli ndjeshëm taksat për shtresën më të pasur duke prodhuar një gropë fiskale që u mbyll pjesërisht duke reduktuar programet sociale për shtresat më të varfëra. Ndaj nuk është çudi që shumica dërrmuese e miliarderëve, duke përfshirë edhe njeriun më të pasur në botë, Elon Musk, e mbështesin hapur Trumpin.
Edhe në këtë aspekt qeverisja oligarkike në SHBA do legjitimonte dhe ushqente qeverisjen në funksion të një pakice të pasur që prej vitesh po konsolidohet në Shqipëri. Sikurse argumenton me të drejtë kolegu Bushati pasiviteti i qeverisë Rama përballë skandalit të mikro-kredive që ka shkaktuar plot tragjedi në jetën e mijërave qytetarëve të thjeshtë është një shembull i dhimbshëm se si, dhe për kë, qeveriset në Shqipëri. Skandale të tjera si ai i Bashkisë së Tiranës, skandali i inceneratorëve, rritja e papërballueshme e çmimit të banesave, gjendja e sistemit të shëndetësisë dhe e sistemit arësimor publik, apo ligje si ai i investitorëve strategjik që favorizojnë më të pasurit, janë shembuj të tjerë që në Shqipërinë socialiste në qendër të vëmendjes nuk janë qyetetarët e thjeshtë por interesat e një pakice pranë pushtetit politik.
Së katërti, presidenca Trump do ishte një grusht i fortë për gazetarinë e pavarur jo vetëm në SHBA por në të gjithë globin, duke përfshirë edhe Shqipërinë. Denigrimi dhe linçimi publik që Trump i ka bërë mediave në SHBA është i paprecedent. Me termin e famshëm “fake news” ai ka delegjitimuar një sistem mediatik që, me gjithë problemet e shumta, ka qenë një nga shtyllat e demokracisë amerikane.
Consequently, the delegitimization of the independent media in the USA would strengthen the delegitimization of the media and independent journalists in Albania, both by the government and the opposition. The arrogance with which Prime Minister Rama treats journalists, the generalizing and contemptuous classification that he makes of the media as a boiler or the direct attacks with bulldozers against the assets of the media owners, would simply be normalized with the arrival of Trump in power.
Finally, but not least, the Trump presidency would consolidate an aggressive and authoritarian political culture where the political opponent is treated as an enemy that must be eliminated and publicly lynched. Trump's political articulation is based purely on emotion, hatred and victimization. In it there is no space for cold and rational argument, for the discussion and beating of ideas in public, a process without which democracy transforms first into demagoguery and then into dictatorship. In other words, Trumpism as a political spirit destroys the public sphere and political rationality because it reduces the opponent to the enemy. You don't reason with the enemy, you don't discuss and you don't debate. The enemy is hated, denounced, lynched, destroyed and eliminated.
This type of politics-making has been perfected in Albania by Berishism, although it is not a monopoly of the right or only of Berisha. If it succeeds and is consolidated in the USA, then it will be normalized and legitimized even further in Albania, ultimately degrading our public space. The normalization of a public space where the one who disagrees with you is a traitor, sold out, degenerate or crazy, means the normalization of a space where neither logic nor alternative thought can exist and consequently neither pluralism.
The monotony and uniformity of our public space is not a coincidence, it is the product of a bipolar political discourse that eliminates the birth of any kind of political or ideological alternative. Lining up in the trenches to eliminate the other makes our public debate more like the battlefield, where arguments die, than the ancient Greek agora, where arguments flourished. Therefore, the Trumpist and Berishist discourses are the main gravediggers of the public sphere and, consequently, of democracy itself.
For all the above reasons, the victory of Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential elections in the USA would be very bad news for Albanian democracy. The Trump presidency, on the one hand, would endanger our fragile justice reform, on the other hand, it would legitimize attacks on independent media, oligarchic governance, the reduction of political parties to the interests of the leader, and the degradation of our public sphere. Therefore, we, as Albanians, should not analyze the re-election of Trump in the presidency of the USA with the narrow party lens SP-PD, but with the broad political lens of dictatorship - democracy./ Lapsi.al
