The decision of the Congress of Manastir is the first pro-European act taken by the Albanian elite since the death of Skanderbeg.
Today is the day of the Congress of Manastir, which in November 1908 decided that the Albanian language would be written with a single alphabet.
The history of those days of the Congress of Manastir is a synthesis of the history of Albania. At the table of the delegates who decided what alphabet the Albanian language would be written with were three options.
An alphabet with Latin letters, an alphabet with Greek letters and an alphabet with Arabic letters.
For this reason, the Congress of Manastir was not a meeting of linguists, but a parliament.
That parliament decided that Albania should go with the West.
At that time, there was no Europe, no EU and no institutions. Albania was not an independent state and the only institution that determined belonging to a political community was language.
Therefore, the decision of the Congress of Manastir is the first pro-European act that the Albanian elite has taken since the death of Skanderbeg.
To understand how courageous this decision was, it should be remembered that Turkey itself, the country that had occupied us for 500 years, changed its alphabet from Arabic to Latin in 1928, 20 years later than Albania.
In a sense, the province also led its Empire. As is the case today and as could not have been otherwise, at the Congress of Manastir there was a minority that demanded that Albanian be written in the Arabic alphabet.
These were the Albanian Islamists, whose remnants can still be found in Albania today.
Fortunately, Muslims and Islamists were divided there.
Many enlightened imams and Muslim patriots joined Gjergj Fishta, Mit'hat Frashëri, Luigj Gurakuqi and Ndre Mjeda in voting in favor of the Latin alphabet.
Muslims chose Albania, Islamists chose Islam.
The former chose the West, the latter the East.
Imagine for a moment if the Islamists had won.
Perhaps Albania would not exist, the Albanian language would be an Arabic variant and our entire culture would be primitive, deformed and very poor.
We might not have any literature, art and films at all.
Instead of the eagle, we would have an eye from the Quran on the flag, as many Islamists have indeed sought with great zeal.
The Congress of Manastir separated Albania from the Ottoman Empire, which is the greatest misfortune of our history.
All those who say that the Ottoman Empire saved us from assimilation because we did not become Greeks or Serbs are miserable Islamists.
This is an ugly thesis that justifies the occupation and those who are with the occupation are even worse than the invaders themselves.
The opposite is true.
Albania was unjustly divided by its Serbian and Greek neighbors because it was considered a small Turkey that lost the war together with the Ottoman Empire.
When they fall, Empires break like pieces of large mirrors, taking with them the small vases around them.
This is our case.
We fell with the stained glass and were shattered.
If this had not happened, today Kosovo would be Albania along with half of Macedonia, Ioannina, and part of Montenegro.
We lost these territories as collaborators of a losing and primitive Empire that devastated Albania in a barbaric way.
Europe accepted and certified our division by unfairly prejudging us as Ottomans.
This is the bitter truth of our history.
My maternal great-grandfather, Simon Shuteriqi, was one of the 50 delegates to the Congress of Manastir.
When I think that he was a 25-year-old boy who voted against the Ottoman Empire, I am filled with pride.
A year later the Turks took revenge and maimed him in Elbasan, when they discovered that he was part of a secret society that was organizing to take up arms against them.
Recalling my ancestors, I am pleased to say that we have always chosen to be on the right side of history.
We have always been against the invaders.
This is also the day to ask the Albanian state to do everything possible to take over the administration of the ruined Congress building of Manastir in Bitola, Macedonia.
That building belongs to us. That is where our history is. That is where the museum of our resistance is.
There I would work as a cicerone to teach young people how Albania was born from letters.

I madhi etimolog arvanitas, Niko Styllos, thote qe ne ate kongres u votuan dy alfabete, ky qe kemi sot dhe ai i punuar nga Dhaskal Todhri dhe Sami Frasheri ose, me sakte, alfabeti I Elbasanit, qe kishte 52 GËRMA, nje variant I alfabeteve te vjetra etrusko-pellazge. Dhe.... jam I sigurt qe Todhri nuk kishte plumb me shkronja latine kur e vane, por pikerisht ato qe u trembeshin te gjithe, shkronjat e vjetra!!!

Fatmiresisht ne ate kongres u ngarkuan delegate jo politike dhe jo te pushtetit,pasi ne ate kohe kishte pak interes per gjuhen,dmth per shkrim e kendim (ose e thene me sakte ato qe drejtonin vendin e kishim mendjen te paraja dhe pushteti), por njerez te ditur me shkrim e kendim, madje shkrimtare e poete nder me te medhenj Shqiptar, Gj.Fishta,M.Frasheri e N.Mjeda, si asnjegere me pare, por edhe me pas, na dhane keto shkronja alfaberi e kete gjuhe te mrekulkueshme.
Bravo Blush! Respekt per te paret e tu dhe ju qe jeni gjithmone te reshtuar ne mbrojtjen e qyteterimit te shqiptareve!
