To return to Trump's demand for the written bankruptcy of the West vis-à-vis Russia, this has been his card up his sleeve from the beginning.
When he declared that he would end the Russia-Ukraine conflict before entering the White House, Donald Trump was confident and serious. He did not only believe in his "special" skills for negotiations and agreements (years ago he was the author of the book "The Art of the Deal"), but he believed and continues to believe that with the formula that he intends to propose these hours to President Zelensky and European leaders in the Oval Office, the war could end in the blink of an eye.
What is filtering through these hectic hours around this meeting is described as an ultimate demand for Ukraine, more than an offer or compromise proposal. Give up Crimea and other occupied territories, commit clearly and in writing that you will never join NATO, and this will bring peace with Russia. This is the de facto Russian-American position after the Alaska talks, where Trump moved the US towards the Russian position, paving the way for Vladimir Putin in all his demands. Not to mention that he also offered him a unique showcase to showcase his easy victory over the American host who was applauding an occupying party as it approached on the red carpet!
To return to Trump's demand for the written bankruptcy of the West vis-à-vis Russia, this has been his card up his sleeve from the very beginning. A card towards an imposed peace that would lead Trump, among other things, towards the Nobel Peace Prize, which would satisfy his ego as big as cold Alaska.
The truth behind the scenes is that Donald Trump approached the podium of the most delicate negotiations of his career as US President, on the platform of the leader who is making a mess of the world, instead of leading and uniting it. He sat down at the table opposite Putin while he had been antagonizing Europeans, Canadians, Indians, Japanese and Chinese for months due to the trade war of tariffs, while he needed and still needs dialogue and possibly agreement and cooperation with these factors to resolve a conflict that today affects all international relations, global peace and security. When Trump needs a broad diplomatic front against Russia that knows only the language of war, he chose to blow up all the geopolitical landmarks of the last 80 years and go to meet history in Alaska, the only one and demotivated to achieve something better than surrendering to Putin.
The paradox between the “America First” thesis on the one hand and the old-fashioned mediation and lobbying for the Ukrainian conflict on the other hand, defines the narrowed window of maneuver and the tied hands in which Trump finds himself today. Trump aspires to an America closed and at economic and trade war with the rest of the world, but at the same time claims the position of the most powerful state that maintains over 700 military bases and continues to seek a primary role in global affairs. Both of these trends cannot coexist as they are on a constant collision course.
It was expected that Vladimir Putin would travel to Alaska for show, not compromise, because he doesn't need one. He should simply wait for Trump to kneel before him, as he did you, by backing down from the condition for immediate peace or the multilateral meeting he promised before taking the presidential plane to Alaska.
Donald Trump failed in relation to Ukraine, but what is more serious is that he completely caved in to the Russian position, making it his own. And this is amateurish and capitulating behavior in the eyes of world public opinion. Which has been flirting with the idea for years that the star of American dominance in the world is declining. Alaska showed exactly this!
So it is no coincidence that he is preparing to ask Zelensky, Macron and others today to accept point by point what Moscow is demanding. He has not had the will and energy to achieve anything more, he does not really believe that Ukraine has been attacked and is suffering unjustly, worse still, he does not think that the occupiers should be punished, but that they should be heard and applauded sometimes.
With such an attitude, it is surprising why he has delayed the decision on Ukraine for so long. He could have really made this kind of unilateral compromise before entering the White House. "We can't win against Russia"? Let's give it what it wants and be done with it! "We can't handle Putin"? Let's applaud him and move on! Many may find this ugly, but this is the level of leadership that the world's largest democracy is at today./Java News
