The telenovela of the Peçi Earthquake and the story of the Këlcyrë Bridge...
If you think Albania is boring and routine, think again. A few days ago, the Albanian public was confronted with a “scandal” that had it all, a mysterious woman, a politician, a car, a USB, a jealous husband, a police patrol and, what’s more, a bridge. Yes, the Këlcyrës Bridge, which from a natural monument was temporarily turned into the headquarters of high-level intelligence operations.
The story begins with Elda Xhakollari, a name that, until yesterday, did not remind you of anything except perhaps a job in the administration. Until a video spread like a wave of Balkan espionage, she was seen getting into the car of Termet Peci, a well-known figure in politics and in a television debate where the tension usually crosses the boundaries of theft.
From there began the "USB theory". Elda, according to invisible but always informed voices, was handing over sensitive state data to Peç on a USB. No less, but in an isolated place like for a movie, so as not to be discovered. So, not in a cafe, not in an office, but on a bridge. Because, as we all know, every serious secret operation takes place on a bridge in the south of the country, where Russian spies and FBI microphones sleep.
But then comes the twist, Elda herself denies it. She says it was just a business meeting, no USB, no secret data, no plans to overthrow governments. In fact, in an interview, she expresses shock at how a personal moment has turned into a public farce.
Meanwhile, her husband, who seems to have been more interested in the soap opera than the truth, followed her, filmed her, and called the police. Because, in the absence of secret services, now every offended spouse is both an investigator, a prosecutor, and a 4K cameraman.
The police went to the scene, saw no criminal act, and left. No one in handcuffs, no exploding USB, no top-secret document signed by NATO. So, "007, Mission to the Këlcyrës Bridge" turned out to be just a short-form jealousy series.
But who is Termet Peçi in this story? A kind of local James Bond who, according to witnesses, “has no connection to USBs” and “barely knows what lists are.” So, no access to secrets, no technological prowess, and no desire for any more drama than what Albanian politics offers him every day.
In conclusion, we have a story that began as betrayal, was treated as a conspiracy and ended as a black comedy with tragicomic notes. Because in Albania, even a business meeting in a car can be seen as a national threat. All this, while the real USBs with sensitive data are probably still forgotten in some office drawer.
Lesson of the day? In this country, be careful when getting in a car with someone for a business meeting, you could end up as the protagonist in a movie you never shot.
