A car fell off a bridge last night in Gallura: there were five young people on board. A 25-year-old man died. The accident occurred along the Baldu-L'Agnata road, in the villages on the outskirts of Tempio Pausania. The victim was named Omar Masia, from Calangianus, and was the son of Massimiliano Masia, a firefighter on duty at the local station, who intervened to provide first aid. The boy was returning from a party at an agritourism with four of his friends. The car, a BMW, went off the road at around 4 am and ended up upside down in a ravine. The young man who was at the wheel managed to get out of the car and ran on foot to a nearby house to seek help, because there was no telephone signal in the area.
Three of them were trapped inside the car. For this reason, the intervention of the Tempio Pausania firefighters was necessary. But his father was also in the team that arrived at the scene. Omar's friends, all between 24 and 25 years old, were pulled out and suffered several fractures. Unfortunately, he did not make it. "We are shocked. The whole team went down into the abyss and our Massimiliano realized that his son was in front of him. All the boys were pulled out, they climbed up. The only one who unfortunately did not make it was Omar," explains the commander of the Sassari firefighters, Antonio Giordano, to Repubblica.
"I was immediately informed of what was happening by my people and immediately sent a second support team." There were terrifying moments. The firefighter did not want to leave his son. His colleagues supported him as much as they could. Omar was an electrician and was doing an internship. His grandfather had also been a firefighter. Now the investigation will clarify what happened. Speed is being considered as the cause of the fatal collision in which the young man, who was in the back seat, lost his life. The conditions of the asphalt are also being assessed, as there has been rainfall in Tempio Pausania in recent days. Tests for the use of alcohol and drugs are also expected, as is the procedure when a serious accident occurs.
"I have already personally called the psychological support service for Massimiliano and the four colleagues who were with him during the night. Everyone is shocked by the tragedy that has struck our family," adds commander Antonio Giordano. /La Repubblica
