The village of Gryksh i Madh in Peqin is in mourning after the tragic loss of 4 members of an Albanian family in Italy. The news of their deaths has shocked the community, bringing pain to every family in the area.
Villagers say the family had been living in Italy for about three years, having previously worked seasonally in Greece. According to them, the move was dictated by the need for survival and a more stable life.
"These are the wounds of emigration. We sent our children away with our own hands and now they are coming back to us in coffins," say the neighbors, referring to the constant sacrifices and insecurity that accompany emigration.
They remember that the family had come for the New Year's celebration and had parted ways with relatives amid congratulations and hopes for the future. Today, these last meetings are mentioned as painful memories.
The incident occurred in the Lucca area of Italy, where Arti Kola, Jonida Kola and their two children, Hajdar and Jessica Kola, lost their lives as a result of a gas leak from the apartment's boiler. According to Italian authorities, the four family members were found lifeless when the carabinieri forcibly entered the apartment.
The tragedy has also affected local Italian institutions. The mayor of Porcari, Leonardo Fornaciari, reacted publicly, expressing the solidarity of the community.
"We are all shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our community joins relatives and friends in a symbolic embrace for this great loss. May they rest in peace, all together," he told "News 24".
Fornaciari recalled that the municipality of Porcari had experienced a similar tragedy 34 years earlier, when the Italian Malanca family lost four members to carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty boiler. A public park named after them now stands in the area, commemorating that event.
From Grykshi i Madh in Peqin to Porcari in Italy, the pain remains the same. A family lost their lives far from their homeland, while two communities face the consequences of a tragedy that once again highlights the human cost of migration.
