Over 80 kilograms of cocaine have been seized in the port of Vigo in Spain, while two Albanian citizens have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in an international drug trafficking network. The narcotic substance was hidden in a container that had arrived from Ecuador.
The operation was carried out by the Civil Guard and the Customs Supervision Service at the Spanish Tax Agency, as part of increased controls on cargo considered high-risk.
According to authorities, the investigation began after the Risk Analysis Unit at Vigo Customs selected a suspicious container for inspection. The cargo was subjected to an X-ray inspection by the Radiological Control Unit at the Border, where irregularities were found in the internal structure.
During the checks, it was discovered that the container's cooling system, in addition to the declared goods, also contained packages of narcotics hidden among the technical mechanisms.
After the initial finding, the Anti-Organized Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA) in Pontevedra, in collaboration with the Civil Guard and Customs Surveillance structures, organized an undercover operation to identify the people who would attempt to take the shipment.
The attempt to recover the drugs was recorded in the early hours of Sunday morning, February 15. According to official sources, the two suspects were caught red-handed while trying to enter the container.
In the first intervention, 61 packages of cocaine were seized, as well as various logistical materials, including four sports bags, a folding ladder, a drill, plastic ties, and mobile phones.
A second check, carried out on Monday, February 16, with portable radiological equipment, led to the discovery of nine more packages hidden in the refrigeration system, bringing the total quantity seized to over 80 kilograms.
Investigations:
The two Albanian citizens are suspected of being part of a criminal organization operating at an international level. The case is being investigated by the Court of Investigation No. 2 in Vigo, while the operation is still considered open and the authorities do not rule out other arrests.
According to Spanish authorities, the port of Vigo remains a strategic point in the fight against cocaine trafficking from Latin America to Europe, and controls have been intensified this year. This is the second significant seizure of cocaine at the port in 2026.
