Due to not being registered in the system, his name did not appear in routine checks.
According to Italian media and investigative authorities, Markelian Hoti had managed to remain invisible for some time by taking advantage of the registration procedures of the 'shelter' where he was accommodated.
Specifically, he was staying at a B&B in the Ponte di Nona area of Rome, but his data had not been entered into the Italian police's electronic system "Alloggiati Web". This portal forces hotel and accommodation owners to record the identity of each client in real time, so that law enforcement can carry out automatic verifications.
Due to his non-registration in the system, his name did not appear in routine checks, making him virtually invisible to the authorities during this period. Only after a coordinated monitoring activity by the International Police Cooperation Service and the Rome mobile team were investigators able to locate him and verify his identity.
So, according to the published information, he did not use a false identity, but took advantage of the lack of official registration in the accommodation structure control system.
Markelian Hoti's criminal record:
Markelian Hoti, 27, played a key role in an organization specializing in cocaine trafficking from South America. The drugs arrived at the port of Antwerp in Belgium and were then transported in high-powered vehicles from Northern Europe to Dubai. After the seizure of 50 kilograms of cocaine, hidden in containers arriving in Antwerp, Hoti had lost track.
In January of this year, a European arrest warrant was issued against him for "collaboration with the aim of drug trafficking", a criminal offense that in Italy provides for up to 15 years in prison.
The arrest was made possible thanks to the continuous monitoring of the International Police Cooperation Service, the Sirene Division of the Central Criminal Police Directorate, in collaboration with the anti-drug section of the mobile squad, to verify his possible presence in Rome. Investigators of the Rome mobile squad, led by Roberto Pititto, located and detained him on the premises of the structure where he was staying.
Markelian is the brother of MP Elda Hoti. We recall that in 2025 he was charged with intimidation during his sister's election campaign, after allegedly threatening a person with a firearm. According to reports, the case was closed without criminal consequences.
