A 41-year-old Albanian man, wanted since last October for a 2016 theft in Stoupa, Greece, was arrested at Valerio Catullo Airport (Verona).
The Albanian was caught as he was about to board the airline to travel to Albania, where he probably intended to lose track.
During the document check, it was found that an international arrest warrant had been issued against him.
According to Greek authorities, the man is suspected of carrying out a robbery worth 130,000 euros. Taking advantage of the trust he had built with the owner, who had previously employed him for agricultural work, he allegedly obtained information about his habits and the way he stored his money. The 41-year-old is accused of forcing his way into his former employer’s car, parked near his restaurant, and stealing a laptop bag containing the cash, divided into banknotes of various denominations. Greek authorities have described him as a “professional thief”, highlighting the preparation with which he is suspected of acting.
After his arrest, the Albanian was taken to the police station for questioning and then transferred to the Montorio prison, where he was held by judicial authorities. Under European law, the crime is punishable by a prison sentence of more than three years. The extradition process is now in the hands of the judiciary, which will decide whether to transfer the 41-year-old to Greece to face the charges.
