An operation led by SPAK and coordinated with Italian authorities, conducted on Friday evening in Tirana, has led to the arrest of 10 people, while two others identified as call center owners have been declared wanted.
The checks were carried out by BKH agents, in implementation of a decision by the GJKKO, while 6 premises were searched, one of which was in one of the towers in the center of Tirana, where it is believed that the call center offices were located.
The checks relate to an investigation launched by Italian authorities, following the investigation of the Le Iene show in Italy, regarding fraud through call centers.
The investigation of Italian journalist Luigi Pelazza has revealed the existence of an organized system that, through call centers, which operate in several countries, including Albania, has defrauded and stolen millions of euros from thousands of citizens around the world.
The scheme is based on phone calls promising easy profits and digital platforms that simulate investments in situations that do not actually exist. Through the account of an insider, the highest levels of the organization were traced, including the identification of the person responsible for recruiting call center personnel in Albania.
The Italian journalist revealed how the scam works. Specifically, the operators require an initial investment of 250 euros to invest in shares. When citizens agree to make the initial investment, they are given access to a website where an amount of 50 thousand euros is displayed, which is presented to them by the operator as their personal account. When the citizen decides to withdraw the money, the system tells them that they must make a new transfer to enable the withdrawal of the funds. In this way, the amount stolen from the citizens was multiplied, until they realized that they would never be able to get their money back. Authorities have discovered traces of the people responsible for the thefts, traces which they have also brought to Albania.
As part of a joint investigation with the Italian authorities, SPAK and the National Bureau of Investigation in cooperation with the State Police have conducted several inspections in several rented premises in Tirana, with the aim of finding materials or other valuable items, in connection with an investigation into fraud through call centers. The suspicions are that in order to lose track, the call centers were constantly changing the offices or premises where they carried out their activities.
For weeks, Luigi Pelazza of "Le Iene" has been investigating the fraudulent scheme carried out through call centers.
The correspondent of the well-known Italia 1 program wants to discover who is really at the head of the system and, thanks to an inside source, has managed to track down the suspected perpetrators in Cyprus, Malta and Albania, to the possible involvement of one of the Italian police force officials.
The investigation revealed that Alfonso is a police officer who had recruited young Italians to work in call centers abroad to defraud unsuspecting investors.
The Salerno police officer stated that years ago he had simply recruited some young people for call centers in Albania and other Eastern European countries, tasked with assessing them before sending them to work abroad. He allegedly performed this task on behalf of a friend, without payment. "These are just consultations I did 10 years ago," the Salerno police officer stated, "to determine their language skills."
And when Pelazza told him that he could not perform this duty as a policeman, Alfonso replies: "At best I will receive a disciplinary sanction from the State, but it is not like they will sue me." /Pamphlet/
