An Albanian human trafficker was sentenced to prison in Great Britain. As the BBC writes, investigators from the National Crime Agency, NCA, believe that Eglantin Doksani, 24, may be responsible for transporting hundreds of people across the British Channel in 2022, in small boats.
They identified the young Albanian as one of the partners of Hewa Rahimpur, the leader of one of the human trafficking gangs.
Doksani was found guilty of 7 charges, including facilitating illegal immigration, and was sentenced to 9 years and 9 months in prison by St Albans Crown Court on Wednesday.
Iranian Rahimpur, who police believe was behind a ring that smuggled 10,000 people into the UK via small boats, was jailed for 11 years in Belgium last year.
The NCA said Doksani acted as an agent for migrants, brokering places on boats operated by the Rahimpur network and others.
WhatsApp chats found on Rahimpur's phone showed discussions about people Doksani wanted to send to Britain.
In one message, Doksani told Rahimpur: "Please try to do something tomorrow to carry the bags because I have 10 other people waiting for me. Cash in hand".
In another, they were discussing payments, with Doksan saying: "Next time bro, I'd rather do it all together." 10 people for 30 thousand pounds".
NCA officers arrested Dokan at his flat in the Isle of Dogs, east London, in July 2022. As they approached the house a bag flew out of the window, which was later found to contain cocaine.
He was released on bail pending investigations. Arrested again in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, after further evidence of his criminal activity was uncovered.
Doksan was also convicted of fraud, money laundering and other drug-related charges. He faces deportation after his release from prison.
"We will never know how many people he was able to traffic, but there are probably hundreds," said an NCA official about the 24-year-old Albanian.
