The judge of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, Astrit Kalaja, has died after being attacked with a gun a few moments ago. He was shot in the courtroom after a clash with a person who was a party to the proceedings.
The person pulled out a gun and opened fire on the judge, seriously injuring him. He also injured two other people, a father and son. The judge was rushed to Trauma, but unfortunately he lost his life on the way. Police have detained the perpetrator, identified as Gjon Shkëmbi.
It is reported that Judge Kalaja had a property case in hand involving the perpetrator, so it is believed that the motive for the crime was related to this case.
Judge Kalaja was born in the city of Shkodra and graduated in 1993 from the Faculty of Law. As soon as he graduated with the title of "Jurist", he was appointed to the position of judge in the Shkodra district. For the last seven years, he has been a member of the Court of Appeal, which brings to 18 the number of years that connect him to the justice system. As part of the Vetting process, he was reconfirmed in office in December 2019.
