The investigations began in 2023, and in total over 60 kg of cocaine, hashish, and heroin or cannabis were seized. Around 80 thousand euros in cash, weapons, and other valuable evidence were also seized.
The organization used coded language, often including the Albanian nickname “Daku ” by which the contingents called each other. Environmental and telephone interceptions were carried out, as well as decrypting various conversations on platforms, social networks and phones.
The organization is known to have consisted of 5 cells, and cocaine from Latin America, where the best quality was selected, came mainly through Belgium and Spain.
The drugs were hidden in specially constructed double bottoms in the vehicles. 22 people had been arrested earlier in various operations, while investigations by the Antimafia of Trento are in progress. Stops were carried out in various areas of Tyrol, the northern region of Italy. From Milan to Ancona.
Details from the Italian police about Operation "Daku":
Italian authorities have implemented 10 security measures with prison for people all residents of the province of Bolzano, while 8 other people have been placed under house arrest and 10 others are under obligation to appear in various provinces, including Barletta-Andria-Trani, Brescia, Monza Brianza, Pordenone and Sondrio.
According to the investigations carried out by the Bolzano Mobile Squad and led by the Trento Anti-Mafia District Prosecutor's Office, the measures were taken following a complex operation against national and international drug trafficking. The investigation began in June 2023 with the arrest of three people and the seizure of over 1 kilogram of cocaine.
During the operation, 22 people were arrested in flagrante delicto and a total of 34 kilograms of cocaine, 23 kilograms of marijuana, 5.6 kilograms of hashish, 76 thousand euros in cash suspected of being proceeds from drug trafficking, as well as a firearm were seized. Authorities have documented around 150 drug distribution episodes.
The investigations have revealed the existence of a structured criminal organization operating in a stable manner in the territory of South Tyrol, with a national and international reach. The members had clearly separated roles and considerable logistical and financial capacities, which guaranteed a continuous supply of drugs, mainly cocaine.
The group used sophisticated methods to evade investigations, including fictitious phone numbers, social platforms and encrypted communications through VoIP channels, vehicles modified for drug transportation, and hidden facilities for storage, processing, and distribution.
The investigations identified not only the leaders, but also collaborators, including suppliers, warehousemen, distributors and couriers who transported cocaine from Belgium and Spain to Italy, often with loads of 10–15 kilograms hidden in vehicles with special seats.
The network operated along a complete supply chain, from sourcing drugs abroad, transportation, storage, and wholesale and retail distribution.
In addition to the main core, five other territorial groups were also active. One of them provided high-quality cocaine thanks to direct contacts with importers in South America, with a high percentage of the active substance of up to 85%. Another group, made up of young people, dealt with distribution at the local level.
A third group, based in Merano, was supplied from Spain and supported the main group during periods of absence. Its leader fled to Barcelona after the first arrests.
Another group was involved in supplying marijuana from Lombardy, while the last group, made up of young people from Bolzano, distributed cocaine and hashish in small doses. This group also used weapons to collect debts from problematic clients; during a police check, a semi-automatic pistol was seized.
