The bloody clash between the Tepelena groups led by Elton Çiço and Jani Aliaj began 2 decades before the latter was executed.

A conflict between two people turned into a spiral of assassinations that would involve two groups, two countries, and several cities.

It all starts in Western Attica, Greece. A 20-year-old, E. Ballazhiu, originally from the Memaliaj region, was stabbed to death. The perpetrator was Jani Aliaj. The victim was a childhood friend of Elton Çiçës… They had grown up together in Tepelena, in the same neighborhood, with the same social and family ties.

" It's one of those stories that is worth discussing, but it seems that there is another development from what we are usually used to, where in other stories we see that in some way the blood of a murdered person is taken from people close to him, a brother, a cousin, while in this story between Jani Aliaj and Elton Çiço the blood is taken from a friend ," said Xhevahir Zhabina, journalist.

" This has created the fact that we have a high number of victims and the never-ending of these conflicts, which are very violent conflicts, have led to serious criminal offenses, and have also led to numerous murders ," said Indrit Sefa, a lawyer.

The murder was not perceived as an isolated act, but as a personal wound. When Çiça learns who the perpetrator was, his reaction does not remain silent. He sends words to the prison. A direct message: this murder would not remain unanswered.

At that time, Alia had been arrested and was in custody in Greece. The conflict, before it had even physically materialized between them, had taken the form of a promise of revenge.

About three years later, fate places them both in the same institution: Koridhalo Prison, where "Jack" would end up.

Alia already sentenced to 18 years in prison for murder. Çiça to 5 years for drugs. Two men from the same city, with an open blood feud, are separated only by the walls of a high-security prison.

The first physical confrontation occurs in the airing. Çiça stabs Alina, who manages to survive. The conflict had gone from warning to direct bloodshed. But even this episode did not close the cycle.

" In Albania, it has been proven in many cases that some criminal stories never end. They have continued for years, for decades. Unfortunately, these phenomena exist in our society, there is a sense of revenge, and it is an inherited story, it is an inherited feeling,"  said Indrit Sefa, a lawyer.

Some time after this event, Alia is granted leave after serving about 10 years of his sentence. He leaves prison and never returns. He is declared wanted by the Greek authorities. Çiça, on the other hand, completes his sentence and is released. Both are now out.

And when two enemies with a history of blood are released, the clash is not extinguished, it is displaced.

From that moment on, revenge erupted on several fronts: Gjirokastër, Tirana, Durrës, Fier. Assassinations carried out, failed attempts, people killed and wounded who were not always the direct target, but part of the circle. For a decade, this saga is estimated to have produced four victims, five wounded and several assassinations that remained in the attempt.

"The information was that a clash between the groups would be very bloody, as both groups had a lot of people, were quite powerful economically, and their revenge would be very bloody ," said lawyer Gjergj Nikolla.

Before the bullets found Elton Çiçë in Tirana, there had been two clear attempts to eliminate Jani Alina. Two episodes that, taken separately, might have seemed like sporadic clashes. But, placed in the same chronological line, they resemble warnings of an approaching end./ InsideStory
