Belgian authorities arrested in the city of Leuven a 40-year-old Albanian man, internationally wanted by a European arrest warrant issued by the Perugia Prosecutor's Office. He was hiding in Belgium to avoid serving the remaining 4 years and 11 months of his prison sentence.
According to the General Prosecutor's Office, he participated in a criminal organization active in international drug trafficking.
Investigations link him to events in 2006, when, in collaboration with other people, he is suspected of transporting 20 kilograms of heroin from Albania to Italy.
The group operated mainly in the Pescara area and several surrounding municipalities. Of the amount trafficked, 12 kilograms were destined for the Ravenna market, while another 8 kilograms were sent outside Italy to avoid immediate intervention by the authorities.
The Carabinieri of the Special Operations Group carried out the investigation that ended in 2013 with the dissolution of the organization. In that operation, 71 people were arrested and about 7 quintals of heroin and marijuana originating from the Balkans were seized.
The 40-year-old disappeared in June 2025. The Perugia prosecutor's office, in collaboration with specialized structures and international police cooperation services, reconstructed his movements. He was initially located in Recife, Brazil. Further investigations led him to the Heverlee area in Belgium, where his family lives.
The arrest was made in Leuven as part of a coordinated operation between authorities. He is currently in custody in Belgium and is awaiting extradition proceedings to Italy.
