Found dead on a billboard in Brussels, Belgian media: Bekim Halilaj was executed

Found hanging near the Brussels ring road, Bekim Halilaj was reportedly executed for the loss of a cocaine shipment.

However, the courts have not ruled out suicide as a possibility, Belgian media reports.

His body was discovered last Sunday hanging from the back of a road sign on one of the main roads of the Brussels ring road. Following the discovery, the Brussels Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation and conducted an autopsy, but did not provide further details on the circumstances of the death.

According to Belgian newspapers Sudinfo and Het Nieuësblad, Bekim Halilaj had a known criminal history.

In 2017, he was sentenced to seven years in prison in the United Kingdom for cocaine trafficking, as part of an Albanian criminal network that had trafficked drugs worth over £4 million in Southampton, Hampshire. After a nine-month investigation, British authorities seized large quantities of cocaine and cash in connection with his criminal activity.

After serving his sentence, Bekim Halilaj was deported to Albania, but later settled in Belgium. Sources tell RTL that Halilaj was “kidnapped, executed and hanged as a warning after the loss of a large drug shipment, with the clear message: ‘This is what happens if you try to harm us.’”
