Details emerge from the murder of Astrit Kalasa, the judge was shot with 3

New details have emerged from the Monday afternoon assassination attempt on the premises of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, where Judge Astrit Kalaja was executed.

Official sources confirm that 30-year-old Elvis Shkëmbi, now arrested, shot the judge three times, leaving him dead on the spot.

The incident occurred at around 15:40, in the inner halls of the court, during a session where Shkëmbi was a party to the proceedings. In addition to Kalaja, two other citizens, father and son – Rakip and Ervis Kurtaj – who were in the courtroom as parties to the proceedings were also injured in the shooting. One of them received a bullet in the arm, while the other was wounded below the ribs. Both are out of danger.

Astrit Kalaja was a judge at the Court of Appeal for 12 years and was confirmed in office by the Independent Qualification Commission after a vetting process in 2019. His murder within the judicial premises has shocked public opinion and brought back into focus the minimum security guaranteed for judges in Albania.
