"Dyl Mysheku" by Ilir Mborja, a satire that strikes at the lethargic

Ilir Mborja's novella "Dyl Mysheku" that came out of print is a poignant reflection of Albanian reality, a work that combines subtle humor with deep philosophy and that, through a seemingly simple narrative, strikes at the heart of our national ontology. The theses and antitheses of Marxist-Leninist philosophy, revealed in the dialogues between Dyl and his former professor, serve as an allegory of the current Albanian transition, where the clash between former values and the new logic of the market takes on grotesque forms.

At its center stands the figure of Dyli, once a weak student with the symbolic surname Hici, who after the '90s becomes a successful businessman selling mattresses. This transformation is not simply an individual story, but a powerful metaphor for the way in which Albanian society in transition overturned values, elevating those who once had no weight and leaving people of knowledge and dedication in the shadows.

The author, who writes in the first person when he describes his meeting with the post-90s Dyli, who gets out of a black Benz and struts in front of him, is a scene that sums up all the absurdity of the time. The professor, representative of the generation of old values, just out of the madhouse..., tired and abandoned, faces a reality where he realizes that his knowledge is no longer valid. While Dyli, with a strange self-satisfaction and perhaps cynical about himself, but in fact with the one he once despised, explains that "God helps the fool", thus justifying his success, unlike his former professor, as deserved... In this reversal of roles, the author shows us how Albanian society often rewards those who have a commercial flair and not those who have knowledge...

But the essence of the novel lies in the metaphor of the mattress. Dyli does not simply sell a product; he sells a way of life, an entire national philosophy. For him, the mattress is a “political treatise,” an object that represents not only physical comfort, but also social sleep, that sleep that has paralyzed the spirit of protest among Albanians. In a country where people often choose to be silent, to be patient, to wait for “the night to go away,” the mattress becomes a symbol of collective lethargy. They used to say “Bread with cottage cheese and TeleDue,” today they say “Go to sleep, stay comfortable, until this night goes away too!”

Dyl's anecdote about immigrants in the 1930s, who supposedly sang the anthem "Around the United Flag/With a Mattress and a Carpet", is a bitter humor that highlights a profound truth: Albanians have often dreamed of easy wealth, a comfortable life, success without effort. In this sense, Dyl's business is not a coincidence. He knows well what the people want: comfort, not confrontation; sleep, not awakening; a mattress, not protest. He understands that for a society that only sleeps and does not wake up, raising the "standard of living" begins with buying a mattress...

Mborje's novel, filled with humorous vicissitudes and searing irony, leads the reader to a deep reflection: who will awaken this people from their long sleep? Who will break this cycle of lethargy, where people sleep while others take their future? Through dialogues between himself and Dyli, the author shows us how true knowledge often remains worthless in a society that values commercial instinct more than critical thinking.

“Dyl Mysheku” is not just a humorous novella; it is an accurate diagnosis of the Albanian soul, a silent call to wake up, to not leave the steering wheel of life in the hands of sleep. In this sense, Dyl’s mattress is much more than an object; it is a metaphor for a nation that must decide whether to continue sleeping, or will it finally wake up?
