Tensions within the organization of Eurovision 2025 are escalating day by day, reaching unprecedented proportions. After the withdrawal of Spain, one of the "Big 5" countries, as well as the Netherlands, Slovenia and Ireland, today there has been official confirmation from Iceland: it will not participate in the 70th edition of the European song contest.
The decision was made public on Wednesday afternoon by Icelandic public television RUV, which announced the boycott due to Israel's participation, in light of what many countries and civil society consider a genocide in the Gaza Strip.
In the official statement to the media, RUV emphasizes: " Considering the strong public clashes in Iceland and the reactions against the EBU's decision to admit Israel to the competition, it is clear that neither joy nor peace will prevail in a possible participation of Iceland in this edition of Eurovision ."
It further adds: “ Today’s decision is that RUV officially communicates to the EBU that it will not participate. Eurovision has always aimed to unite the Icelandic people through music – but it is now clear that this mission cannot be fulfilled under these circumstances .”
This development comes after a wave of international reactions to the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), which decided not to expel Israel, despite serious international accusations of war crimes and massive human rights violations in Gaza.
