"Glorious, but empty-headed", Haxhi Kroi: What Enveri told about Haxhi

How Haxhi Lleshi and Myslim Peza were prevented from entering Enver's villa...

Part Six

Continued from Part Five

Haxhi Kroi, the man who worked for four decades in Enver Hoxha's office, is one of the rare ones who has known the mysterious relations of the head of the regime with close associates, starting from members of the Political Bureau, governors and local leaders. In what he has written in his diary, the fact is revealed that Hoxha reserved a double opinion, with two opposite approaches, for every matter. Legally, in public every man was glorious, outstanding, consequent for him; in confidence, deceitful, immoral, breadwinner, empty-headed, etc. His contempt was not exhausted even in cases of death. In a note dated June 1, '76, Haxhi Kroi, while talking about the notification he gave to Hoxha about the death of Mustafa Pajenga, former member of the Central Committee since the III Congress and First Secretary in several districts for many years, underlines the reaction dismissive of the spiritual leader, who suddenly surprised him with inappropriate considerations for the deceased. "Comrade Enver ordered me, writes Kroi, to make him a telegram with very limited terms, because recently he has made many mistakes and it is said that he had a quarrel with Beqir Balluk and his friends." In the memoirs of the chief of staff of the head of the regime, there are many cases of the shock that the latter gives to other leaders. A maniac of this behavior, Hoxha does not even spare the historical figures, Haxhi Lleshi and Myslim Peza, for whom he has been giving the most positive evaluations in public for years. Surprisingly, these "prominent tribunes", as it appears in Kroi's notes, for the leader have also been small men, even immoral, as in the case of Lleshi who "went with his secretary" and fools like Baba Myslimi "who brags about the war". but "he has not been so brave". From the target of such considerations, not even the other leaders, starting from Balluku, Hazbi and Mehmet Shehu, when polygamy had not yet been declared. In the diary, Kroi singles out another unpleasant episode in the relations with Haxhi Lleshi, the "veteran president", who did not deign to participate in the Congress of Professional Unions on June 9, 1982, without learning whether Enveri(!) would go or not. "There is a dose of arrogance and stupidity here," writes the secretary of the Party leader, scorning Lleshi's claim for a treatment like Enver's.

Haxhiu and Myslim Peza are not allowed to enter Enver's villa

A few weeks before his 75th birthday, Enver Hoxha suffered another heart attack. The situation created on the eve of the jubilee ceremony dictated changes that first affected the protocol of the guests. As never before, the maximum reduction of the participants who would go to congratulate the leader has been ordered. Beyond this unknown fact, Haxhi Kroi's diary reveals other details about the experiences of senior leaders from this special holiday, where the flow of wishes for the newly shocked leader's health eclipsed the one for his birthday like never before. According to the memories of Hoxha's personal secretary, due to the circumstances created by the sudden illness, but not only, only a small group of senior leaders participated in the 75th anniversary celebrations. In the note dated October 15, 1983, Kroi claims that he notified himself according to the order of the members of the Political Bureau, while Ramiz Alia had notified the members of the Presiduium of the People's Assembly. In addition to these, according to him, Haki Toska, Pilo Pelisteri, Spiro Koleka and Shefqet Peçi, who had recently retired, were announced by special invitation. Unlike other times, in this jubilee of the "Commander", two of his early collaborators were expelled, who had not only lost their former glory, but also the confidence of the Party dome. The notes of Hoxha's chief of staff reveal an interesting fact: By order of Ramiz Ali and Nexhmija Hoxha, Haxhi Lleshi and Myslim Peza were left out of the protocol of VIP visitors who would welcome Enver home on October 16, 1983 on the occasion of the 75 birth anniversary.

Annoyance from co-workers

In the last years of his life, Enver Hoxha was bothered by the presence of colleagues and associates. In his office at the KQ, as Haxhi Kroi testifies, apart from him, Ramiz Ali and Nexhmija, very rarely did anyone else enter. That's how annoying Hoxha was in this period, the exchange of congratulations and condolences with other leaders. The director of his cabinet has noted in his diary dozens of cases where the head of the Party has turned back a bunch of such practices. "I gave Comrade Enver a congratulatory telegram that we had prepared for Comrade Sadik Bocaj on the occasion of his 60th birthday," Kroi wrote in a note dated February 27, 1982, but he did not sign it. Of course, he must know something bad about Sadik's behavior." Another note of this nature was made by the personal secretary of the head of the regime on May 12, 1982, where he wrote that Hoxha refused to sign the congratulations telegram for Qirjako Mihal's birthday with the reason that "he is young, there will be time to congratulate him (!)" This happened to other leaders as well, where Hoxha refused to sign a letter of condolence for Pali Miska, Lenka Çuko, Tefta Cami, etc. (Continues...)/ Pamphlet
