Veliaj: One year in prison, two and a half years of investigations, has cost the Albanian state over 1 million euros in salaries for prosecutors, investigators, judges, logistics, guards, transport, administration, experts.
The preliminary hearing of the case of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj concluded today. The hearing was held behind closed doors and was accompanied by debates.
"A year in prison, two and a half years of investigations, has cost the Albanian state over 1 million euros in salaries for prosecutors, investigators, judges, logistics, guards, transport, administration, experts. Today, the hook has become more expensive than the fish you claim to have caught," said Veliaj, reports journalist Anila Hoxha.
Mayor Veliaj then decided to leave the courtroom, claiming that his defense was not being heard.
"Since you are not listening to me, I am leaving the courtroom," said the Mayor, while earlier he had requested the exclusion of Judge Etleva Deda, arguing that she did not give him the right to effectively defend himself.
The GJKKO also rejected a request from the chiefly appointed lawyer, Valentina Teodorescu, who requested a postponement of the hearing, as she had not consulted the mayor about the investigative acts.
Judge Etleva Deda withdrew to decide whether to proceed to trial or not, while the next hearing will be on February 9.
Along with Veliaj, SPAK has also named his wife, Ajola Xoxa, as defendants, as well as 28 other individuals and companies.
SPAK has listed 13 charges against Veliaj, such as passive corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and bringing items into prison.

Pas disa viteve burg dhe të çveshur nga pasuria e grabitur, do ju vijë turp të deli në xhiro në Tiranë. Se burgu është edhe një institucion riedukimi dhe kthjellimi.
