Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, has reacted through a video published on social networks regarding the phenomenon of Albanian emigration, describing the massive departure of citizens as a consequence of an economic and institutional system that, according to her, does not reward merit and competition.
According to Tabaku, Albania is today facing a new historical crossroads. She emphasized that in the early 1990s the country faced a crossroads for democracy and European integration, while today the challenge is mainly economic and is pushing citizens to leave the country.
Referring to Eurostat data, the opposition MP stated that during 2024 alone, around 44 thousand Albanians left for European Union countries. Meanwhile, during the 2021–2022 pandemic years, according to her, Albania lost around 180 thousand citizens due to emigration.
Tabaku stressed that the phenomenon is particularly alarming since around 60% of those leaving are young people who do not see real opportunities to build a life in the country.
"It is the young people who face the rising cost of living, with prices that increase every day and with increasingly lower incomes. It is the young people who bear the highest taxes and who face a lack of economic opportunities," said Tabaku.
She argued that the problem is not only related to economic indicators, but also to the way the system in the country functions.
"There is an economy captured in a few hands and a lack of competition that is reflected in every sphere, from the economy to public administration. This is the main reason why young people leave and why businesses close," the DP MP emphasized.
At the end of her reaction, Tabaku emphasized that the situation requires a profound change in the economic model and in the way the state functions.
"We need to change this: an economic system that is today hostage to a few hands and that is forcing Albanians, especially young people, to leave the country ," said Tabaku.
