The Regional Summit on the Growth and Convergence Plan is taking place in Tirana today, focusing on the integration of the Western Balkans towards the European Union, as well as the implementation of the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
The Commissioner for Neighborhood Expansion, Oliver Varhelyi, stated that the European Union's plan for economic growth in the Western Balkans envisages the doubling of income for the countries of the region in the next 10 years.
During his speech from the EU-Western Balkans summit, Varhelyi said that this plan will work only if the countries of the Western Balkans will implement the rules of the European Union.
Furthermore, Commissioner Varhelui disclosed the conditions as he said that there is half of the time left to implement this plan. He further added that the EU should offer all the benefits to the countries that will become members of the European Union.
Varhelyi said that in addition to the 30 billion euros, another 6 billion euros should be given. Among other things, he said that the region should move forward quickly only with reforms.
"Thank you very much Prime Minister. I am very happy to return to Tirana, which has already become a meeting point for the entire region.
Even though we are at the end of the mandate, I want to leave something behind, something serious and tangible for the expansion process. This process of excess shows that the economy of the Balkan societies should be integrated into the EU, which means that the EU must offer all the benefits before your countries become members. As a plan it is ambitious, and we have full confidence in all countries that you will receive all the benefits of this plan to double the economies of your countries in the next 10 years. This means that the development gap will have reached development compared to the EU average.
In order to move forward, the region must only move forward rapidly with reforms. This plan will work if you apply EU rules.
This plan has the potential to contribute to the benefits that the Balkan countries can benefit from. Some countries can achieve 100% development, while others 60%. What we have ahead of us is much more than that, but moving forward means that the region moves forward itself despite the difficulties. The wish I have to express is for our financial partners, where in addition to the 30 billion euros, another 6 billion is requested, which brings all this to the level of the structural funds of the member countries. These will become part of the economy of these countries, for economic growth. The European Bank, the EBRD, the IMF, you all need to speed up your work and efforts. We are at the beginning of a radical but also very fast change in the Western Balkans ", said Varhelyi.
