The criminal amnesty is expected to be approved today in the Albanian Parliament, during the plenary session scheduled for this Thursday.

Minister of Justice, Toni Gogu, in a statement to the media before the start of the session, announced that hundreds of convicted persons will benefit from this amnesty.

According to him, 446 people will be immediately released from prisons after the law is approved, while 869 others will receive a reduction in their sentences.

Gogu emphasized once again that the amnesty will not include any person who has been or is being investigated by the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK).

"466 people are released from prisons and of these people, there are 11 women and 1 minor and the sentence for 869 people is reduced and here we have 8 women and 8 minors. No person and no offense that is under the jurisdiction of SPAK benefits," said Gogu.

In addition to the criminal amnesty, today's parliamentary session also foresees the holding of four interpellations with members of the government cabinet.

A few days ago, the Laws Committee approved the draft law on criminal amnesty and forwarded it to the plenary session for consideration. To be approved, the draft law requires at least 84 votes in the Assembly. The Socialist Chairman of the Laws Committee, Ulsi Manja, also called on opposition MPs to contribute to securing the necessary support for its adoption.
