The court decided to uphold the arrest order...
The Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) held a session today to review the request of the former President of Albania and leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, for the mitigation of the security measure "prison arrest". At the end of the process, the court decided to leave the arrest measure in force, rejecting Meta's request to replace it with a lighter measure.
Today's hearing, held under the direction of Judge Igerta Hysi, focused on the appeal filed by Meta's lawyers against the decision of the Special Court of First Instance, which on June 26, 2025, confirmed the arrest measure issued since October 21, 2024.
Meta, who has been in prison for 9 months, has consistently opposed the measure, describing it as a decision with a political background and without legal basis.
Meta's lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, after the end of the session, called the decision of the Appeals Court of the Constitutional Court to leave in force the security measure "prison arrest" against the leader of the PL political persecution.
" The President has been in detention for 9 months, it is unprecedented for the President of the Republic to remain in detention for 9 months without completing the investigations. He is being held under conditions of political persecution, you know very well what he is losing today in detention where he has been denied basic rights such as those of exercising phone calls with colleagues, or members of the Presidency or his family. Meta is there, he will face everyone, he is an individual who is not easily defeated. Meta will continue to face these people ," Cakrani said.
Meanwhile, a few days ago, the leader of the PL filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court against the decision of the High Court that left him in prison. In the request addressed to the Constitutional Court, Meta states that the decisions of the three courts, the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Court of First Instance, regarding the measure of prison arrest against him, are unconstitutional, as they violate the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, emphasizing that he is being held in a cell without charge.
We recall that Ilir Meta was arrested on October 21, 2024. The arrest was made by order of SPAK, as part of the investigations launched since 2019 into the CEZ-DIA affair, which is related to the privatization of the energy distribution company and debt collection, as well as undeclared lobbying payments in the United States by the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI), now the Freedom Party.
Meta and his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, are also accused of money laundering and concealment of assets, including the purchase of properties and undeclared medical expenses during the period 2013-2019.
