The Democratic Party MP on the closed lists and at the same time its political leader for the Lezha district, Agron Gjekmarkaj, after exercising his right to vote in the city of Lezha, gave a statement to the media where he also commented on the arrest of the husband of MP Elda Hoti.
Gjekmarkaj described the arrest as a trap set by state bodies, which, according to him, instead of punishing those who violate the electoral process and engage in vote buying, are targeting citizens who defend the right to vote. He stressed that the Democratic Party is monitoring every case of abuse and will publicly denounce them.
" It is an important day for Albania, citizens must receive the benefits of democracy. Albanians must be vigilant, participants. Today I have my daughter with me who does not vote, but we must educate her about the sanctity of the vote because indifference is the greatest enemy of democracy. As for the question, I think that state bodies are placing us in a pre-democratic situation, pre-state because they should have been the guarantors of the process, instead of dealing with vote buyers, they are dealing with citizens who protect it. The DP strongly condemns it as a political scenario and is identifying the participants to refer to the competent bodies", said Gjekmarkaj.
