The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, held a reception today with representatives of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Albania.
The Head of State thanked the diplomatic missions in Tirana, their representatives and countries, for the contribution given to Albania so far, mainly in the process of justice reform, democracy and integration towards the European Union.
According to Begaj, EU integration is not only a political ambition, but is also related to sacred values for us. He added that this process remains for us a major project of peace, well-being and development.
The President also highlighted the great support that Albanians have for the US, while also focusing on reforms. According to him, integration and the rule of law are not given, but are a process of concrete and tangible results.
Regarding geopolitics and Albania's role in the international arena, the president noted that official Tirana has strongly condemned Russia's aggression in Ukraine and is closer to NATO with new missions and bases in the country.
Begaj also touched on judicial reform. He thanked the US for its support and role in advancing this process. He also called for more dialogue between political parties.
Speech by President Bajram Begaj:
It is a pleasure to meet again at the beginning of this year. Each of our meetings serves to strengthen the relations between our countries and the commitment to deepening them.
Last year, I had the opportunity to be invited to some of your countries, and I hosted heads of state in Tirana, with whom I talked and discussed current and future common challenges. Albania also during this year further consolidated the role of a reliable partner in foreign policy, with a proactive role on the regional stage, as European affiliation is organically intertwined with strategic partnerships.
We started the transition in 1990 with the slogan “We love Albania like all of Europe” and last year we took important steps towards European integration. The opening of negotiations is evidence not only of the appreciation for the reforms that Albania has undertaken, but also an indicator of our determination and commitment to advance in this transformative process towards our European belonging. Our journey towards a united Europe is not only a political ambition, but is inextricably linked to sacred values for us, such as: democracy, human rights and social cohesion.
Bashkimi Evropian mbetet për ne një projekt madhor i paqes, mirëqenies dhe zhvillimit, ndaj ne jemi të angazhuar për kryerjen e reformave të thella, të cilat mbeten prioritet kryesor për të ardhmen e vendit. Integrimi evropian është e vetmja alternativë e Shqipërisë, është zgjedhje e natyrshme e një populli të lashtë, me vlera, kulturë e traditë evropiane dhe përkatësi Euroatlantike. Shqipëria, edhe pse një vend i vogël, ka mbështetjen më të lartë ndaj Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës, Bashkimit Evropian dhe NATO-s.
Ky fakt nuk është vetëm tregues i kulturës sonë historike, por edhe tregues besimi, zgjedhjeje dhe ndërgjegjësimi për interesat tona madhore shtetërore e kombëtare. Shqiptarët janë të bindur se demokracia, integrimi dhe shteti i së drejtës nuk dhurohen, por janë procese thelbësore që kërkojnë bashkëpjesëmarrje, bashkëveprim dhe strategji të qarta për rezultate të prekshme.
Rajoni mbetet një përparësi dhe nevojë strategjike për politikën tonë të jashtme. Shqipëria është një aktor i rëndësishëm dhe njëkohësisht përfitues i drejtpërdrejtë i një politike rajonale konstruktive dhe të moderuar për forcimin e paqes, sigurisë, stabilitetit, zhvillimit të qëndrueshëm dhe bashkëpunimit rajonal.
Shqipëria në veçanti, dhe faktori shqiptar në përgjithësi, do të vijojnë të mbrojnë përkatësinë evropiane, si dhe do të avancojnë kursin Euroatlantik. Shqipëria vijon mbështetjen e pakushtëzuar për Republikën e Kosovës për njohje të reja, për anëtarësimin e saj në organizata ndërkombëtare dhe për afirmimin e saj në rajon e përtej. Sot, shqiptarët e Kosovës janë zot të fateve dhe trojeve të tyre, çka jep shpresë për një jetë e të ardhme më të mirë.
Shqiptarët në Kosovë, në Maqedoninë e Veriut, Malin e Zi, Serbi dhe kudo në Diasporë mbeten në vëmendjen tonë për ruajtjen dhe fuqizimin e identitetit kombëtar dhe garantimin e të drejtave të tyre. Samiti i Procesit të Berlinit dhe Samiti për Agjendën e Rritjes dhe Konvergjencës në Tiranë kanë forcuar angazhimin tonë për një rajon më të integruar e më pranë Evropës.
Shqipëria ka luajtur një rol aktiv dhe të qëndrueshëm në organizatat ndërkombëtare, e udhëhequr nga besimi dhe përkushtimi në vlerat e përbashkëta demokratike. Në Këshillin e Sigurimit të Organizatës së Kombeve të Bashkuara kemi dënuar me forcë agresionin rus kundër Ukrainës. Si anëtare e Këshillit të të Drejtave të Njeriut të OKB-së, Shqipëria ka qenë e angazhuar dhe e vendosur për mbrojtjen e të drejtave të njeriut në nivel global. Aktivizmi ynë është shprehur edhe si vend anëtar në NATO. Vitin e kaluar pata mundësinë të vizitoja trupat tanë ushtarakë që, në kuadër të misioneve të NATO-s, janë dislokuar në Letoni dhe Bullgari.
Ndonëse vend i vogël, Shqipëria, brenda pak kohësh, ka arritur të jetë partner i besueshëm dhe i dedikuar për të dhënë kontributin në Aleancën e NATO-s. Kjo duket qartë edhe në hapjen së Bazës Ajrore Taktike në Kuçovë, punën për mbarimin e Korridorit VIII, si dhe vënien në dispozicion të Aleancës të portit të Porto Romanos.
Strengthening the Euro-Atlantic Alliance must be a priority. A strong and united NATO will contribute to facing any challenge. Our foreign policy goals go hand in hand with achieving national objectives and meeting the challenges that lie ahead. Many of your countries have supported us closely in various areas, especially in judicial reform.
The quality of the justice system at every level and the fight against corruption and organized crime remain top priorities. I have a special thanks to our strategic ally, the United States of America, for its irreplaceable contribution to consolidating justice in the solid pillar of our democratic state. The quality of political dialogue in the country remains a challenge. Albania is known for intercultural and religious dialogue.
Under this example that has marked Albanians for centuries, I hope that the dialogue between political parties will also return to the normality of political life in the country. Several important successes have been achieved in this regard, and one of them is the consensus on finalizing the legal basis for the Diaspora vote. This was an obligation that politics had for Albanians abroad for years.
Thanks to this consensus, in the parliamentary elections of May 2025, the Albanian Diaspora will have the opportunity to contribute, with its vote, to the selection of the best alternative for the country. Elections are a test of maturity and, more than the result, what is important for us remains the respect and implementation of standards that guarantee free, fair, just and democratic elections.
Last year, Albania was chosen as a tourist destination by many citizens of your countries. This is proof that hospitality, development and security yield positive results when each of us contributes. Tourism remains one of our long-term development priorities, so I hope for your valuable contribution to the promotion of Albania.
I am convinced that your mission is of particular importance this year as well. Cooperation, understanding and intensive contacts to strengthen international relations contribute to a world where tensions are reduced and dialogue, peace and prosperity prevail.
