Agron Gjekmarkaj, the Democratic Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, while expressing support for the independent candidate for the Municipality of Tirana, Florjan Binaj, in the by-elections, considered him a prominent civic profile worthy of representing the capital.
From the studio of the show 'This Week', Gjekmarkaj said that his candidacy comes as a reflection of society's demand for a voice outside of traditional politics.
"Society has had a great concern to have its voice beyond politics. Binaj is an extremely qualitative profile, an architect by profession, a man who best reads the city in its dynamics and an artist who with his talent has touched on all the great concerns of this society. He is a regular family man and I believe he is running a positive campaign," said Gjekmarkaj.
The Democrat MP compared Binaj's candidacy to that of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, emphasizing that Binaj represents a new civic spirit and an honest reaction to Tirana's real problems.
"He reminds me a bit of Imamoglu in Istanbul, but I hope he doesn't have his fate. Binaj talks about polluted air, traffic, lack of standards and many other things that concern the citizens of Tirana today. I believe he is the best solution and I see him as a person with perspective and a winner of the Municipality of Tirana," he emphasized.
Gjekmarkaj also focused on the importance of civic will in the electoral process, emphasizing that the support Binaj is receiving on social networks is sincere and not manipulated.
"Every person who gives consent on social networks does so with their own mind and not under patronage. There is an entire process from consent on networks to voting, which even the OSCE/ODIHR has treated as manipulated, but I believe that the city of Tirana will know how to react," concluded Gjekmarkaj.
